Wathnan can strike again in the Queen Elizabeth!
I’m hoping we can end Ascot with a bang, and I believe I have found the perfect horse. Wathnan Racing won this race last year with Lazzat, and they also took third place with today’s selection, Flora Of Bermuda. I think this mare can come out on top this time, and in this article, I’ll explain why.
Flora Of Bermuda was a fantastic third in this race last year
Flora Of Bermuda was third in this race last year, which provided Wathnan Racing with the 1-3 after Lazzat came home in front. I think Flora Of Bermuda deserves plenty of credit for that run.
She was drawn on the wrong side of the track with the 1-2-4 being drawn in stalls 11, 16 and 14, but Flora Of Bermuda came from a low draw in stall four. She also bumped a rival 1f out which didn’t help her cause. She burst through from the pack on the wrong side of the track, but was unable to land a blow on the front pair from there. This time around, she has a much kinder draw in stall 13.
Flora Of Bermuda comes here off the back of a win
Flora Of Bermuda flopped on her next start at Newmarket, but she reared as the stalls opened, so it’s easy to draw a line through that. Similarly she was only ninth here two races later, but again, she wasn’t helped by being drawn in stall one. If we look at the rest of her form, she was a close third, beaten by 1.25 lengths, in the Betfair Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock. That was a huge performance, as her RPR of 114 suggests. Especially so considering she was slightly hampered 2f out, and denied a clear run 1f out.
Her latest race at Newmarket came after a 196-day break, where she defeated Rosy Affair in Listed company. She should have benefitted from that run physically and also confidence-wise. In addition, the form has been franked by Rosy Affair winning again since, so there is a lot to like about that preparation.
James Doyle takes the ride and he has won three recent renewals
Being the number one jockey for Wathnan Racing, James Doyle had the choice of Lazzat or Flora Of Bermuda last year. Of course, he landed on the right horse as Lazzat won. Once again, he had the choice of two Wathnan runners Kind Of Blue or Flora Of Bermuda, and he has chosen our mare!
James Doyle knows what it takes to win this race and also how to achieve that. He won last year’s renewal with Lazzat, he also won the 2019 and 2022 renewals with Blue Point and Naval Crown respectively. No other jockey has enjoyed more success in the race over the last few years, so he’s the right man for the job!
Can Flora Of Bermuda go two better this time?
I believe Flora Of Bermuda can outrun her 18/1 odds, and hopefully, we’ll see her come home in front. She has proven form in this race and elsewhere at Group 1 level. Her third place last year can also be marked up, as can a couple of her other efforts. She comes here in winning form, which has been franked since. She should also step forward for that, given it was her first run after a break.
The fact that James Doyle thinks she is the number one contender for Wathnan Racing is a big plus, especially when Kind Of Blue is rated 3lb superior. I’m also happy with the draw in stall 13.
In terms of negatives, she does have a modest strike rate of 3/19, although she has been placed several times. We need her to have a clean run today and deliver at the business end. That said, I think she has a fantastic attitude, so I don’t think she’ll fail for a lack of trying.
All facts considered, I feel she is underestimated at 18/1. She’s a proven Group 1 performer, and she runs today with the ground, draw and jockey to suit, so I think she’ll run a huge race and is well worth a 1pt each way bet.
