On the fourth and final day of the Ebor Festival at York, there was only ever going to be one race for this article, and that is the Ebor Handicap itself. There’s a £500,000 prize pot up for grabs, 22 runners, and the horse who comes home in front will scoop a mouthwatering £300,000. I have enjoyed tipping success in this race previously, and this time, and this year I have a 28/1 contender for you.
I’m Gav, better known as RacingGav here and on X/Twitter. I’m the resident horse racing expert at Betting.co.uk and I publish several articles each week. These are usually free horse racing tips, but I also write other types of content, which includes horses and trainers to follow, educational guides and big race trends.
On Saturdays I publish two articles. My core betting tip, which is this one, and a Lucky 15 bet covering the ITV Racing action! This week, ITV are covering York and Chester and I have done the same. Make sure you check out that article next.
The best horse racing odds for Real Dream are available at bet365. A few others are matching the 28/1 on offer, but bet365 is the only bookie paying six places rather than the standard five. In addition, they have a great sign up offer. If you bet ÂŁ10 get ÂŁ30 of free bets. Exceptional value from all angles.
Some may think I’m mad but I think Real Deal has a far better chance in the Ebor Handicap than his 28/1 odds suggest. In this article, I’ll explain why I believe that.
If you go off bare form, Real Dream comes into this Ebor Handicap after finishing seventh in the Betway Trophy at Newmarket. However, that result is far from being the full picture. At the 3f pole, and then the 2f pole, Real Dream remained on the bridle while most around him were firmly off it. However, he was all dressed up with nowhere to go.
There was only half a furlong to go when he finally saw daylight, by which point, the race was already over. If you look at the sectional data, he was 0.02s off producing the fastest final furlong in the race. Interestingly, Wine Dark Sea and Asgard’s Captain, who placed fifth and sixth respectively, both won next time out to give that form some real substance.
Real Dream had similar luck in last year’s Ebor Handicap too. He was held up in mid-division and denied a clear run from 2f out. Once he saw daylight, he stayed on inside the final furlong to finish fifth, but he wasn’t able to get closer. He went into the race with a handicap mark of 103 and carried 9st 7lb, with French Master top rated on 108 and carrying 9st 12lb.
This year, the top weight is Opportunity who is rated 110, and carries the maximum 9st 12lb this time. However, off a 7lb lower mark of 96 Real Dream runs here with just 8st 12lb to carry. In real terms, that is 9lb less than last year which should not be underestimated.
My long term followers will know that I am a huge fan of Ian Williams. When big prize money is put up, he’ll go for it. Everything from the Racing League to the Shergar Cup and even the Cesarewitch has been ransacked by Ian, and he does remarkably well with the firepower that he has.
The Ebor Handicap is the richest in Europe, so it’s no surprise he is targeting it. His fifth place with Real Dream last year landed him £14,300. In 2024, he had third place with Oneforthegutter, winning £47,500, and in 2022, Alfred Boucher chased the legendary Trawlerman home, generating £89,950. Alfred Boucher was only beaten by a short head that day, and considering the career Trawlerman went on to have, he definitely bumped into one!
Between the 2022, 2024 and 2025 renewals of this race, Ian has scooped over £150,000 in prize money, and very nearly pulled off a win! I wouldn’t be surprised to see his runners involved again and hopefully it’s Real Dream with his head in front this time.
With Real Dream’s latest run proving that he’s in great form and at 7lb below his last winning mark, there is a lot to like about his chances. He is versatile groundwise, so the softer going shouldn’t bother him, and from stall 10, Cieren Fallon should have plenty of options. We also know that Ian Williams likes to target this race, and has done well in recent years.
Playing devil’s advocate, there are a few flaws in the plan, including the fact that Real Dream hasn’t won since July 2023. However, he went within half a length of a Listed success last year, and in February he was less than a length away from a Group 2 victory, so he certainly retains his ability. He has also tried and failed twice in this race, but hopefully it will be a case of third time lucky!
Based on the case built above, Real Dream is a great each way bet in my eyes. I was tempted to bring the stake down, but with a fantastic price of 28/1 available I’m sticking my neck out and playing a full 1pt each way here. Hopefully, fortune favours the brave!
