Amazing Cleni should live up to his name now that he’s switched to fences!
The Cleni part of his name comes from his Dam called Cleni River. However, as yet, we haven’t really seen where the Amazing part comes from! Hopefully today will be the day that we start to see that side of him and I think it will be. In this article, I’ll be breaking down why I think that will be the case, so make sure you read on to find out my reasoning.
Amazing Cleni should relish the switch to fences and I expect to see improvement
Today’s selection - Amazing Cleni, is a big beautiful grey that has always looked like a chaser in the making. Therefore, I was quite surprised when he was able to finish fourth in what turned out to be quite a warm bumper at Warwick back in December. Sadly, it’s largely been backward steps since then with form figures recorded of 680789.
However, on the positive side, it means that he got an opening mark of 92 and that has reduced down now to just 86. Whilst he is no superstar, I think he is better than this mark, especially judged on his bumper debut. I think he’s been crying out for the switch to fences and now at the age of five and with just five starts over hurdles, the stable waste no more time and send him chasing. I think this could be the making of him and I’m very hopeful of a significantly improved showing.
As well as the switch to fences, he also comes here from a stable in great form. Kim Bailey has historically done well in the early stages of the National Hunt season and that looks to be continuing with Mat Nicholls now joining him on the licence.
In the last 14 days, the stable have sent out eleven runners, which have produced four winners. That is a very strong strike rate of 36%! It is particularly eye-catching that three of the last four runners to come out of the stable have been winners! When I was expecting an improved showing anyway from Amazing Cleni, the stable form has just boosted my confidence in him further.
First time cheekpieces have been put on today, which says they mean business
He has the switch to fences, he has the stable being in great form but they also throw on first time cheekpieces as well. That’s the horse equivalent of “It’s game time!” and further fuels my hopes for Amazing Cleni today.
I think that ultimately he will be a staying chaser in time. However, I’m hoping with the cheekpieces applied and the switch to fences, the slight step up in trip to this 2m4f will be adequate to bring out the required improvement. Especially if they ride him more aggressively with the headgear going on.
I also find it interesting that his best run over hurdles to date, judged on RPRs, was his hurdling debut at Ludlow. Ludlow is a sharp right handed track and that is exactly what he’ll face today at Huntingdon. As well as that, it is pleasing to see that the stable have a 50% strike rate at this track so far this season, with two winners from four runners. If you backed the four runners to a £1 level stake, you’d be in profit to the tune of +£12.00.
Can Amazing Cleni make a successful chasing debut?
As I often say in these articles, when deciding if a horse is a bet, you have to assess the positives, the negatives and then the price. For me, there are plenty of positives for Amazing Cleni. He switches to fences which should bring out the best in him, his stable are in fantastic form, he gets first time cheekpieces and he runs off a low mark. I also think the best hurdling RPR coming at Ludlow bodes well for this run at Huntingdon with both tracks being sharp and right handed. Finally it is also good to see some rain forecast, as I think he enjoys juice in the ground.
On the downside, he hasn’t shown a great deal to date. There is also no guarantee that he will improve for the switch to fences. Also, as he’s destined to become a staying Chaser in the future, he may find this 2m 4f trip around Huntingdon an inadequate test. When considering the positives and negatives, you can build a case for and against the horse. I think the positives outweigh the negatives here. Whilst he is far from a good thing, and I wouldn’t be backing him at a skinny price, the odds of 18/1 make him a very appealing bet today. But as there are still questions for Amazing Cleni to answer, I’m down to half stakes for this one.
