For Saturday’s betting tip, I have tackled the feature race at Aintree, The Becher Chase, where 13 runners are set to line up over the Grand National fences. I think I have found the winner for you. She’s extremely well handicapped, she hits the trends and she’s trained by the right man for the job.
If you’re just reading an article of mine for the first time, I’m Gav, better known on X/Twitter as RacingGav. I’m the resident horse racing expert here and I publish a variety of articles each week for this site. These are predominantly tips for horse racing, whether that be on the day (like this one) or antepost. I also write other types of articles such as big race trends, educational guides and much more.
On Saturday’s, I write two articles. I have my usual betting tip article (this one) but I also put together a Lucky 15 too! That article is already out by the time you are reading this and so if you haven’t already seen it, make sure you check it out too.
The stand out bookmaker for today’s horse racing betting tip is William Hill. First and foremost, they are offering the best odds for horse racing at Aintree today. In addition to that they are paying four places and ¼ odds. Last but not least, they also have a fantastic new customer sign up offer. If you bet £10, you’ll get £40 of free bets.. Why not take a look?
Judging from her best form and her Grand National run, it will take something special to beat Galia Des Liteaux in the Becher Chase. If she puts her best foot forward there are few in here capable of stopping her, and her trainer looks all set to add another valuable prize to his grand total.
Last year, Galia Des Liteaux was rated as high as 146 and ran in the 2024 renewal of the Grand National off that mark. Despite a stumble at the ninth, she made headway after the 12th and led the field from four out to two out. She looked to have a massive chance, but sadly she started to weaken approaching the last and faded out of contention. That said, she still managed to finish eighth.
She now comes back to the Grand National fences but off a 12lb lower mark and over a trip that is a mile shorter, both of which should suit. After her run in the Welsh National, her season went astray. However, it was a pleasing return at Carlisle last month and she should be much happier going left handed here. I would also imagine she will be significantly fitter and subsequently improved too. Last but not least, Tristan Durrell takes the ride bringing her 10st 10lb down to just 10st 7lb and effectively seeing her run off a mark of 131!
If you look at the key trends for the Becher Chase, Galia Des Liteaux ticks all the right boxes: -
As you can see, she hits all of the key trends generated by the previous winners of this race. In addition to that, she is trained by Dan Skelton, who also trained the 2022 Becher Chase winner, Ashtown Lad. I would strongly argue that Galia Des Liteaux is a better horse than Ashtown Lad and she turns up here off a 4lb lower mark than what he won it off.
Dan Skelton has been a winning machine this season to date. The last two seasons he has been collared late by Willie Mullins, which seems to have lit a real fire in his belly, and he clearly doesn't intend see it happen for a third time. We are only just entering December and Dan Skelton has already flown past £1.7m in prize money for the season, nearly £1m clear of his next rival.
So far this season, he has already won 10+ big races with the top five highlights being:
With £84,195.00 to the winner of the Becher Chase, this race would rank fourth in his achievements this season financially behind only the Coral Gold Cup, Betfair Chase and Paddy Power Gold Cup. Therefore, I’m sure this has been on his radar for some time now and Galia Des Liteaux looks like she could deliver it for him.
Every big race could be pivotal in the UK National Hunt Trainers Championship this season. Dan Skelton is motoring towards £2m in prize money and as yet, reigning champion Willie Mullins hasn’t recorded a winner on British soil. As a result, Willie sits deep down the rankings currently with just £34,603 accrued from four places. That could of course change tomorrow as Il Etait Temps is favourite to land the £175,000 Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown.
I think Galia Des Liteaux has an excellent chance of pushing Dan further clear in the race to become the 2025/26 UK National Hunt Champion Trainer. She is handicapped to strike, she ticks all the trends and Dan knows what it takes to win this race. On the negative side, she ended last season in poor form but that’s easily forgivable after a tough Welsh Grand National run. Also, for all we know, Operation Becher Chase had already begun in Dan’s mind by then…
With a field of just 13 compared to the maximum 30 allowed, there shouldn’t be as much emphasis on luck in running either. The current favourite is Mr Vango but carrying 12st is a big ask and giving 18lb to Galia Des Liteaux is an even bigger one. I think our mare should be the clear favourite here and I won’t be surprised if she shortens before the off. I was tempted to play 2pts each way, but as I was only tempted rather than certain, I’ve played a little safer with 1.5pts each way.
