We did well again yesterday with Uzincso finishing third at 11/1 SP. That means five of my last six advised bets have been profitable with a 6/1 winner and four places at 20/1, 10/1, 16/1 and 11/1. Hopefully we can keep the trend going with today’s 5/1 selection.
Hopefully you know me by now but if you don’t, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing expert and tipster for Betting.co.uk. I’ve been providing free horse racing tips here since March 2025, which are mostly daily, but I also publish antepost selections and a fun Lucky 15 on Saturdays.
Away from tipping content, I also suggest horses and trainers to follow each month, write educational guides, and discuss big race trends. Two of my educational guides you may find helpful today are understanding the UK Handicap system and different types of horse racing headgear. The former because today’s race is a Handicap and my selection is back down to his last winning mark, and the latter because he wears a tongue tie and cheekpieces.
You may not have heard of Highbet before, but they have a fantastic 4.7/5 rating and a fantastic sign up offer too. If you bet £10 you’ll get £30 of free bets. Want to find out more before committing? No problem, you can check out our Highbet review, but in the meantime I can confirm that they have the joint best horse racing odds of 5/1 for Peaky Boy to win today.
I am a big fan of Peaky Boy, having followed his progress since he arrived at Michael Scudamore’s yard. Peaky Boy was a £240,000 purchase, and he was always destined for the bigger obstacles, but that didn’t stop him from picking up Bumper and Hurdles wins along the way. Although he hasn’t managed to get his head in front since November 2024, this race looks like the ideal opportunity for him to return to winning ways.
Shortly after Peaky Boy’s Bumper win, Michael Scudamore moved up to Scotland to join forces with Lucinda Russell, and Peaky Boy went to Nicky Henderson. He won his first three starts for Nicky, a Maiden Hurdle, a Novice Hurdle and a Handicap Chase, all of which were at Cheltenham. The latter turned out to be his only Handicap win to date.
He won impressively over 2m 4f that day off a mark of 132, in the manner of a horse that had plenty more to come, and with the potential to progress to staying trips. Unfortunately, things haven't quite worked out well for him since, but suffice to say that he is back to his last winning mark of 132, having raced off as high as 140 previously.
Peaky Boy was sold in February 2025 and moved to Jonjo & A J O’Neill’s yard, at which point his form read 3F003 and his handicap mark had tumbled to 132. As a result he is eligible to drop down in grade and run in today's Class 3 (0-130) Handicap.
It may seem illogical, given that he’s rated 132. However, horses rated 131 and 132 are permitted to enter in accordance with the race conditions. At one stage I was convinced that Peaky Boy could be a graded horse in staying chases. Although his career hasn’t worked out that way, I certainly feel he is better than this level and will show his class today.
If you look back through Peaky Boy’s best form, his Bumper win at Newcastle, and his three wins at Cheltenham over Hurdles and fences, there is a consistent theme. Both are big galloping tracks, and both are left-handed. Although he hasn’t raced at Worcester before, it's very similar to the tracks where Peaky Boy has performed best.
I think this track will suit Peaky Boy’s style perfectly, and the way this race is likely to develop should suit him too. Presentandcounting is a horse that goes forward in his races, it’s likely he will do the same here. At a glance, there isn’t much else to see in terms of pace angles, but with 10 declared to run, there’s a fair chance that at least one of the others will keep him honest on the front end. If so, I think Peaky Boy can follow them round, before Jonjo O’Neill Jr winds him up for a power-packed finish late on, which will hopefully see him come home at the front.
Unfortunately, Peaky Boy has had something of a start-stop career, with three different yards, and a couple of different owners. He has also had two rounds of wind surgery, and some other setbacks. However, he is only eight years old, and if the O’Neills can get a clean run with him now, he could have a very productive period.
He is down to a handicap mark where he can be extremely competitive, especially so in 0-130 company. As it stands, he has his preferred Good going, although there is some rain expected. He should also relish this left-handed galloping track.
In terms of negatives, he has had a stop start career and can be quite hard to trust. But, at this level and over this trip, he should be traveling at a comfortable speed which will help. He will carry top weight at 12st 2lb, which is substantial, but he has a professional in the saddle today. Given that there are a few niggling concerns, I have trimmed the stake down to 0.75pt each way. However, I feel he is a class above this level of opposition, and clearly the best horse in this race, which hopefully he will prove today.
