For my betting tip on Thursday we head to Windsor. I’ve got my eyes set on a horse in the opening race, which is a Class 5 (0-70) handicap over 6f. I think this horse is underestimated at odds of 4/1, as I feel he has an excellent chance of coming home in front.

Forget the solar eclipse, it’s all about Solar Invincible!

As I type this article on Wednesday evening, the whole country is seemingly obsessed with the solar eclipse! However, it’s Solar Invincible I’m interested in and in this article, I’ll be breaking down my reasoning. Read on to understand the logic behind this bet.

Solar Invincible is a very genuine horse

The biggest headache you have with horses racing at this lower level is consistency and/or attitude. Some simply don’t try and others blow hot and cold. However, that certainly isn’t the case with Solar Invincible, especially since he has been fitted with cheekpieces.

Since the cheekpieces went on nine runs ago, he has produced form figures of 21-3415422. That is seven of the nine runs seeing him finish in the first three with two victories and three seconds. He was also beaten less than a length for one of those fourth placed finishes and less than three lengths for the other fourth. The fifth placed finish was a rare venture into Class 4 company, so that is forgivable too. If he gets beat, it shouldn’t be for a lack of trying and that’s half the battle!

Solar Invincible has a top jockey booked for the ride

The extremely talented Billy Loughnane has been booked to ride, which is very eye-catching. He’s ridden Solar Invincible on four occasions and they have produced form figures of 1412. In all four of those runs, he has either won or been beaten by a margin of less than a length, so Billy clearly gets a great tune out of him.

With just two career wins to date, Billy is the only jockey to have won on Solar Invincible and hopefully he can make that a hat-trick of wins here at Windsor, to further enhance his exceptional record on the horse. Interestingly, Billy Loughnane has had four rides for Roger Teal this year which have resulted in two wins, a second and fourth. That is a 50% strike rate and to a £1 level stake, he is in profit by +£5.33.

With a 3lb weight swing, Solar Invincible can reverse the form

Solar Invincible’s latest run came over this course and distance (6f at Windsor) after racing over 5f all year. Two things stand out for me here. First, stepping up from 5f to 6f last time, he raced keenly which didn’t help his chances. If he settles better on this second try at 6f, there’s room for further improvement.

The other aspect that I find interesting is that the horse that beat him last time - Madman, takes him on again. Solar Invincible carried 9st 6lb that day whilst Madman carried just 8st 11lb, which was further reduced to 8st 8lb by Jack Callan’s 3lb claim. In today’s race, Solar Invincible is 3lb better off and with David Egan riding Madman instead of Jack Callan, it’s actually 6lb better off when you factor in Madman losing the 3lb jockey claim. I feel this, along with the improvement if he settles better, will be enough to see Solar Invincible beat Madman this time.

Can Solar Invincible gain a much deserved victory?

Solar Invincible will give his all here. He also won’t lack for jockeyship with Billy Loughnane booked to ride. Combining those factors with his weight swing against Madman and the fact he’ll hopefully settle better over 6f this time around, I think he has a fantastic chance of going one better.

In terms of drawbacks, he does need to settle better and there is no guarantee that he won’t be keen once again. Likewise, whilst he is extremely reliable and consistent, he is paying the price for that, going up 3lb for finishing second the last twice, which makes his task more difficult here. He could be vulnerable to a better handicapped rival.

All things considered, I think he has a better chance than the odds of 4/1 suggest. Ultimately, if you ran this race five times, I think he would win more than one of them. He deserves to win it as well after running so well in defeat lately. At the odds, I think he is well worth a 1pt Win bet.
