If you missed yesterday’s article, be sure to go back and give it a read as it’s an antepost betting tip for the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Saturday. Meanwhile, I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that you don’t have to wait until Saturday for another tip, as I have one for you right now. This horse is running in the 15.30 race at today’s Market Rasen meeting. Better yet, at 15/2 she is fantastic value and well worth a punt!

At the time of writing, La Marquise is widely available at 15/2 across most of my recommended bookies, so it’s a tough call, but one that I feel is great at the moment is Betway, and it seems like less of you have an account there. I think it’s time to change that, because if you deposit and bet £10, you’ll get £30 of free bets. A worthy offer for anyone who doesn't already have an account with Betway.
In some countries, a marquis is a nobleman ranking above a count, and below a duke, while a marquise is the female equivalent. Whatever your thoughts on hierarchy, the title suggests class. And that’s why I think La Marquise is very aptly named, as she is a very classy mare who runs for the Jamie Snowden stable.
That class shone through in her Bumpers, and to a degree on her Hurdles debut, but she has yet to fully show her ability in the latter sphere. I think that changes today and in this article, I’ll tell you why.
La Marquise made a winning debut under Rules by winning a Fillies’ Junior National Hunt Flat Race (Bumper) at Stratford and she did it in great style, making all. She had some nice enough horses in behind her that day too, including the now 125-rated Dameofthecotswolds.
Mr Snowden didn’t hold back the regard he held for her, and threw her straight into a Listed Bumper at Cheltenham on just her second start. However, she didn’t fire that day. It was disappointing, but in fairness, it was run over a much shorter 1m 6f trip.
Jamie lowered his sights back down to a regular Class 5 Bumper at Chepstow for her next run, and La Marquise bounced back to win again under a penalty. Off the back of that, he decided to let her take her chance in the Grade 2 Mares’ Bumper at Aintree, where she ran a fantastic race to finish third, amongst some lovely prospects.
Whilst she has yet to transfer her Bumper promise to Hurdles, I believe La Marquise has excuses for her hurdling efforts. But before we get into that, it’s worth highlighting that she did at least start on the right note by winning her Hurdles debut. Plenty went wrong that day. She was not really travelling and had to be niggled along, there was some questionable jumping, and she was badly hampered three out. However, despite all of that, she showed a game attitude to knuckle down and win. That form reads well as Kalium, the horse who placed second, went on to win three of his next four starts and is now rated at 120.
I’m not sure the Good to Soft ground suited her that day, and frustratingly her next run over Hurdles was on Good to Soft ground again, with her most recent run being on Good to Firm. That gives her a potential excuse for her defeats in those two runs. I also just think she was having an off day at Newbury on her second Hurdle start, so I’d draw a line through that entirely.
She had a break of 284 days after that disappointing run, which could have done her the world of good. She was upped in trip to 2m 5f last month and failed to fire again. However, I think the trip was too far, the ground was too quick and she was too fresh. So whilst it looks like a poor run (5th place, beaten by 21 lengths) on paper, I think it’s another easy to forgive run. With that run under her belt, the drop back in trip, the juice in the ground, Gavin Sheehan returning to the saddle and first time cheekpieces going on, there are plenty of reasons for optimism that she could now show her true ability.
In addition to all of these positives for the horse herself, it’s well worth noting her trainer’s form. Jamie Snowden has sent out 24 runners in the last 14 days and they have produced 11 winners, which is a mighty impressive strike rate of 46%. It is likewise worth noting that a further eight of them have finished third, so nearly 80% of his 24 runners have finished in the first three.
This is no fluke spell either, as in October he recorded 12 winners from 34 runners, which was a strike rate of 35%. Again, he had many more hitting the places with 24 (76%) finishing in the first three. Furthermore, he even landed the prestigious Grand Sefton Handicap Chase at Aintree last weekend with Colonel Harry, so it’s not like it’s just nondescript winners going in either.
Hopefully between the factors in La Marquise’s favour and the stable’s red hot form, we can see her true ability shine through today. If so, I think she is better than 0-115 company and has the potential to blow these rivals away. Let’s hope that is the case here!
As always, when deciding on whether to bet on a horse or not, you have to weigh up the pros, the cons and the price on offer. The positives for La Marquise are plentiful. She was a very classy horse in Bumpers and she has had excuses to date over hurdles. She also has many conditions in her favour today. It’s her second run of the season, she drops back in trip and the ground should suit. La Marquise also wears cheekpieces for the first time today, which should help her to focus, and Gavin Sheehan returns to the saddle. Furthermore, the yard is in red hot form, which can only be a positive as Jamie clearly has his horses fit and firing early into this 2025/26 National Hunt Season.
In terms of the negatives, she has been disappointing to date over Hurdles. It is also a little frustrating that the handicapper didn’t reduce her mark after her latest run. However, at the same time, I suspect he is thinking the same as me - She is much better than that! The other potential negative is that she is a mare having to shoulder 11st 12lb, which is no easy task. That said, she’s a solidly built mare with some size, so hopefully she can handle that just fine.
When you consider the pros and the cons and then factor in a price on offer of 15/2, I think she screams out as a good bet today. With just six runners, there is no each way angle but to be honest, I’d be tempted to lean towards a win only basis anyway. In my opinion, today goes one of two ways, she bounces back and runs a huge race here, or she continues to be disappointing over Hurdles and could easily be out of the frame if so. Personally, I’m quietly confident she will bounce back to her best today and has a big chance, so I want to have a solid bet on her. However, given the negatives, I’ve trimmed the stake down to 0.75pt.
