It was great to have found a profitable selection yesterday in the form of Erzindjan, who hit the places in the Royal Hunt Cup at 12/1. I’m confident I can back that up with another solid betting tip today, as we head for Day 3 of the Royal Ascot meeting.

Wechaad can break through for Roger Varian

Roger Varian’s two Handicap runners at this meeting have been beaten by less than three lengths, so he’s not sending them here for the day out. Indalo in particular was unlucky, as he finished best out of the 20 who raced on the far side in the Royal Hunt Cup. In the rest of this article, I’ll explain why Wechaad can be the breakthrough horse for Roger Varian today.

Wechaad caught my attention last time out

Wechaad progressed with every run during 2025, ending his campaign with a place in Group 3 company. After a 210-day break, you would expect him to need his first run this season, so it was pleasing that he finished fourth.

But what particularly caught my attention was that the other four of the first five were all drawn in stall five or lower. Three of those four raced prominently, with the other midfield. In contrast, Wechaad came from a wide draw in stall 15 and from the rear of the field. He kept on strongly inside the final 110yds and I think his run should be marked up.

Given the way Wechaad powered home last time out, I think he’ll relish the step up to 1m in the Britannia Stakes. Especially when you consider that he needed the run last time out, and should have more in the tank at the finish this time.

His pedigree backs up the longer distance too. Wechaad is a half-brother to Saytarr who has won over 1m. Wechaad’s dam was a 1m to 1m 3f winner, who was half-sister to winners over 1m to 1m 2f. Saytarr's dam was also out of a 1m 2f Listed winner and is the granddaughter of a 1m 2f Group 1 winner. So there is plenty to suggest he will thrive for this step up in trip.

Wechaad has drawn one of the best stalls possible today

As already mentioned earlier in this article, Wechaad was inconvenienced by his wide draw and positioning at the rear of the field last time out. I don’t think anyone will argue that with a lower draw, he would have finished closer at the line.

This time around, the high draw looks ideal for him. Time and time again in these big field races at Ascot, the higher numbers on the stand side tend to be favoured and we’ve seen plenty to back up that theory over the last two days here. Today, Wechaad has landed stall 27, which looks pretty perfect to me.

Has Wechaad progressed enough to be a winner?

I think Wechaad has plenty in his favour as he tackles the Britannia Stakes today. He caught my eye last time out when finishing a very pleasing fourth. Crucially he has plenty of reasons to improve, a better draw, a run under his belt, and a step up in trip from 7f to 1m.

In terms of negatives, you always need plenty of luck in running in the Britannia Stakes and for a horse that will most likely be held up, and racing down the more congested near side, he will need the gaps to open up for him when he needs them, which is far from guaranteed.

Overall, I think he has a fantastic chance. He’s certainly one of the leading contenders for me. At 9/1 with six places, I think he is well worth a solid 1pt each way bet here. Roger Varian has already been knocking on the door, and hopefully Wechaad can kick it in for him today!
