For Thursday’s selection, we head to Catterick for a 6f Handicap where a C&D specialist has caught my eye. He has dropped back down to his optimum trip, and he’s also handicapped to strike. He certainly knows how to win here, and hopefully he can do exactly that today. Personally, I see him much shorter than 17/2, so I’m more than happy to back him at a value price.
Before I go diving into the horse and why I’m tipping him, let me introduce myself. I’m Gav, better known as RacingGav here and on X (@RacingGav). I've been resident horse racing expert here at Betting.co.uk since March 2025, and my main focus is providing free horse racing tips. Most are daily tips, but I also post antepost picks, and a Lucky 15 for the ITV Racing every Saturday.
You may have noticed that I also produce other types of content too. This includes, but is not limited to, big race trends, educational guides and trainers or horses to follow each month. The horse I put up for May has already won, and although he has been raised 10lb for that, he looks like the type that still has more to come, so he’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
As I write this article the best horse racing odds are available at bet365, who have 17/2, while the rest of the market are showing 7/1 for Crocodile Power. If you don’t already have an account there, it’s worth opening one. In addition to consistent good value, if you sign up and bet £10 you’ll get £30 of free bets. Well worth the time it takes for the benefits you’ll get.
Catterick is a difficult track to master, but Crocodile Power has become something of a specialist here, which counts for a lot. He has tons of experience, with 15 runs here to date, of which he has won four, all of which were over the same distance as today’s race. I’ll discuss that further, along with the rest of my reasons for betting on him, in the remainder of this article.
Let’s get straight into the aspect just mentioned. Crocodile Power has won seven times during his career, and four of those wins were here at Catterick.
As you can see, his last three wins have all been over 6f on Soft going. However, his last three races here were over 7f on Good going. Although he did manage to place second and third, it’s clear that 6f is the sweet spot for him. The official going is currently Good to Soft with a little more rain forecast. Hopefully that rain will come to fruition, as slightly softer ground will increase his chance.
Crocodile Power’s last three wins were off marks of 57, 60, and 60 respectively, and he is back down to a mark of 61 today. Despite his last run being over 7f on Good going, he still managed to finish second off a mark of 61. And if we look back three runs ago in April, he placed third over 7f on Good going again, but off a 2lb higher mark of 63.
If we look at Crocodile Power’s record by the official going, he is 1/9, with a further four places on Good ground. However, that improves to 3/11, with a further four places on going described as Good to Soft, or Soft. All of that suggests he is handicapped to strike, and in addition, Dale Swift takes over from 3lb Claimer Shay Farmer for this race. For context, Dale Swift has been in the saddle for all four of his C&D wins, so Crocodile Power’s yard clearly believes he has a great chance here.
Ideally, I would prefer this to be a Class 6 Handicap, which is the same level that all seven of his wins have been at. However, despite Crocodile Power being in Class 5 company today, he has placed twice at this level, with the latest of those places being off a 2lb higher mark, so he can evidently be competitive.
There is an awful lot in Crocodile Power’s favour today. With a specialist track like Catterick, horses either love it or hate it, and it pays to follow the ones who love it. Crocodile Power certainly fits the bill, with four previous wins, and all of them over today’s 6f trip.
Combining his course form with the fact he is now just 1lb above his last winning mark, he must have an exceptional chance especially with Dale Swift returning to the saddle. Hopefully the Good to Soft ground is adequate for him to show his best, but if more rain falls that would be better.
All aspects taken into account, I think the bookies are underestimating his chance here at a price of 17/2. As much as I’d like to have a solid each way bet, at the same time I feel I should trim the stake down because the ground isn’t as soft as I’d like, and the fact that this is a Class 5 race. As a result, I have decided to go with 0.75pt each way.
