Itās a new week, and here comes my first betting tip! Thereās a real mix of racing to work with today, as we have Jumps, AW, and Flat racing on Turf, across six different meetings. However, itās a horse at Lingfield that Iām most excited about, and Iām having a 2pt Win bet on him!
If youāre new here, allow me to introduce myself. Iām RacingGav and I have been the resident horse racing expert here at Betting.co.uk since March 2025. The main element of my role here is putting up free horse racing tips and I produce several every week. My betting tips take the form of daily selections, antepost picks, and a Lucky 15 for some entertainment every Saturday!
However, I also publish other types of content including educational guides, big race trends and also horses or trainers to follow. Looping back to antepost bets, make sure you check out the articles Iāve already published. These include selections for the 2027 Aintree Grand National and the Brown Advisory Novicesā Chase at the 2027 Cheltenham Festival.
At the time of writing, two of our bookmaker partners are offering the joint best horse racing odds of 9/4 for Based, who is my NAP bet for today. So I have taken a look at their sign up offers to decide which of them to recommend, and the stand out on that front was BetMGM. If you register andĀ bet Ā£10 youāll get Ā£40 of free bets. Well worth exploring if you donāt already have an account.
Some horses lack ability and/or attitude, and are only āgood enoughā to be Class 6 horses, but others are just passing through on their way to bigger and better things. I believe that Based fits into the latter category, and I can see him progressing through much higher levels than he takes on today.
If you havenāt seen it already, take a look at his last race at Wolverhampton, which was his Handicap debut. He was very much of interest to me that day too, but he was a little too well-backed for my tastes, and I was happy to let him go at the price. And after seeing the horrible run he had, I was very glad I did!
He was away from the stalls slowly, and the horses on either side squeezed him out and into last place. Jockey Curtis Wilson-Ruddock had little choice but to remain in that position for most of the race. As they turned for home, Curtis decided to try and go wide, even though it meant covering significantly more ground than his rivals.
Based ran on down the outside, and passed the entire field except Starakova, who managed to fend him off and went on to win by 2.5 lengths. With a slightly faster break, and a kinder run, he would have had no need to go wide, and could easily have won that race. Remarkably, the handicapper has generously left him on an unaltered mark of 55, meaning he is still eligible to run in this 0-55 Handicap today.
No disrespect to Curtis Wilson-Ruddock, but at the end of the day he is a 7lb Claimer because he lacks experience. Trainer William Knight is clearly intent on trying to win this race, and has booked Cieren Fallon for the ride today. Cieren is in great form too, with 10 winners from 35 rides (29%) in the last 14 days.
Although he has been off the track for 173 days, with a jockey upgrade, Handicap experience under his belt, and a run since his gelding operation, Iām convinced we will see a different version of Based today. If the horse Iām expecting turns up, he is the one they all need to beat here.
While pedigree and ability do not always go hand in hand, itās often a good place to start. Based was sired by Oasis Dream, who was a top-level two-year-old and sprinter. He has three Group 1 races on his CV: the Middle Park Stakes, the July Cup and the Nunthorpe Stakes. He also ran a great second in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock, despite it being unsuitably softer ground.
His dam was a good horse herself, as she was rated 95 at her peak and has a lovely pedigree. Based is also closely related to Without Revenge, a winner over 7f to 1m 2f, and he is half-brother to three other winners, including So Darn Hot (peak RPR of 105). No doubt connections will be hoping that Based turns out better than a 0-55 Handicap horse, considering he set them back 65,000 Guineas as a yearling.
We have only seen Based on the AW so far, so it is a gamble, but Iām sure William Knight believes he will act on turf, or I doubt he would be running him. Thereās also every chance heās better on it. His sire relished quick ground, and we can only hope that Based follows in his footsteps, as the official going description is Good, Good to Firm in places.
Considering all of the evidenceBased should be a tough nut to crack here. Iām not normally one for shorter prices, but Iām happy to take 9/4 this time. He proved on his Handicap debut that he has more than enough ability to win at 0-55 level. He really should have won last time out, and Iām quite amazed the handicapper hasnāt raised his mark, but at least it means he can run at this level again. With a better jockey, experience under his belt, and the switch to Turf, I think we will see a much improved Based this time.
In terms of negatives, he did blow the start last time, so itās possible that might happen again. However, Iām hoping a more experienced jockey can overcome any issues in that department. Weāve also got to hope that he enjoys the switch from All Weather to Turf, as this will be his first run on the latter. Personally, I think Based will enjoy the switch, and Cieren will get him away smartly. Based has the potential to make 9/4 look like a gift and hopefully he will do exactly that.
The search is over! Here are five fantastic free bet offers for horse racing from some of our bookmaker partners. Be sure to check them out as the value on offer is truly exceptional!
