As I write this article, the odds for Simiyann are genrally 6/1, with some bookmakers even going as short as 5/1. However, William Hill has gone the other way by offering the best horse racing odds at 13/2. The signs suggest that today is Simiyann’s day!

Trainer Ian Williams is a shrewd operator and there are a few pointers that suggest today is the day he gets Simiyann’s head in front. In this article, I’ll explain exactly what I'm getting at.

Simiyann won over C&D last year off 8lb higher

To win any Handicap race, a horse needs to be well handicapped. It’s safe to say that Simiyann is exactly that, as he is 8lb below his last winning mark. That win was in August 2025, and it was over 2m here at Ffos Las, exactly the same as today, so we know he handles the track and trip.

His other win on Turf was off a 9lb higher mark of 69 at Haydock in May 2025. When you consider those wins, plus his other two on All Weather, which came off marks of 61 and 67, he certainly looks well treated, as today he runs off a lower mark than for any of his four career wins. Also, his two wins on Turf were in Class 5 company, and he has dropped down to Class 6 today. We know he can win at a higher level, never mind this one.

The visor worn for two of Simiyann’s wins now returns

After heavy defeats in his opening two runs of this campaign, Simiyann needs something to turn his form around. I find it interesting that wore cheekpieces for both of those races, but today Ian Williams has switche to a visor.

Simiyann has worn a visor six times during his career, producing form figures of 912156. In fairness, he produced form figures of 2121 off marks of 61, 61, 67 and 67. It was after he was raised to 76 by the handicapper that he could only manage fifth and sixth on his last two starts wearing a visor. The visor hasn’t been seen since November 2024 and I find it very interesting that it' back in place today.

Simiyann has an eye-catching jockey booking today

As well as the eye-catching handicap mark and the visor, I’m also drawn by the fact that Billy Loughnane has been booked to ride. Billy has been in fine form over the past couple of weeks, with a strike rate of 19%. When Billy Loughnane and Ian Williams combine, they have an all time strike rate of 20%. If you narrow it down to this season/year alone, Billy’s strike rate increases to 23% for Ian. For some context, in the last five years Ian Williams has operated at a 10% strike rate.

A couple of other interesting statistics are that Ian Williams has operated at 17% over the last fortnight, and also that Simiyann’s record in Class 6 company shows two wins and two second places from six runs, which is certainly worth noting.

Can Simiyann return to winning ways under Billy?

There are plenty of positives for Simiyann here. He’s 8lb below his last winning mark, which was also over C&D. His previous win came off a 9lb higher mark, so he’s certainly handicapped to strike. The visor makes a return and Billy regains the ride, so Ian is clearly chucking everything at this horse. As already covered, Simiyann has a strong strike rate with Billy Loughnane, and both trainer and jockey are performing well currently. He’ll also have no excuse with a lovely low draw in stall four.

In terms of negatives, his record of just four wins from 41 runs returns is concerning. Similarly he has been in poor form so far this season. Outside of his overall record and recent form, I’m struggling to find much else!

After carefully considering the pros and cons, I think Simiyann is worth a strong bet here. Whilst it’s frustrating to have missed prices as big as 14/1 yesterday afternoon when the markets first opened, I’m still happy to take 13/2 on this one. With everything looking to be in his favour, it’ll be a strong 1pt each way bet today.
