Erzindjan can defy his odds at Royal Ascot today!

In a race like this, the draw can make or break your chances. Erzindjan has landed a pretty perfect draw in stall 24, as centre or stand side, looks the place to be. In the remainder of this article, I’ll run through the other reasons I like his chances here.

Erzindjan has been treated kindly for his win last time

I tipped Erzindjan here last month, and he won the Suffolk Stakes at Newmarket at odds of 17/2. He cruised through the race, and ran on to lead close to home.

He won quite comfortably that day and was value for more than the half a length margin of victory. For that reason, I believe the 2lb rise in his rating is incredibly lenient, and underestimates his ability.

The Royal Hunt Cup looks the perfect race for Erzindjan

Erzindjan thrives when he can get cover before transitioning to stalking his rivals, then picking them off one by one. That’s exactly why I think the 30-runner Royal Hunt Cup is the ideal set up for him.

His best form has been over distances of 1m 1f and 1m 2f, but this straight 1 mile Handicap race could really suit his style. He has a strong cruising speed and also a great turn of foot. With a field of this size, he should have real targets to aim at, a situation that typically sees him produce his best performances.

Erzindjan has a top jockey booked for the ride today

T J Kent trains Erzindjan and usually books Ray Dawson for big races like this one. However, Ray Dawson will be riding for Roger Varian in this race, I doubt he had much choice in the matter, being Roger’s retained jockey for this season.

However, as replacement jockeys go, Ryan Moore, isn’t a bad one to book. His calmness in the saddle, coupled with his ability to know the right time to strike, is exactly what Erzindjan needs here. Ryan is already on the board with Mission Control, and was a short head away from a Day 1 double with Gstaad. Hopefully Erzindjan can bolster his list of Royal Ascot winners today.

Can Erzindjan give T J Kent his first Royal Ascot winner?

There are plenty of boxes ticked! First and foremost, Erzindjan has landed a strong draw in stall 24. He’s also in winning form, and he has only been raised 2lb after his win last time, which looks lenient. When you factor in that this race could set up perfectly for him, and he has a top jockey in the saddle, there’s a lot to like!

I’m also not seeing much in the way of negatives. One would be Erzindjan’s record of three wins from 35 runs, but he has remained consistent since joining this yard. My other slight concerns are whether he has the speed for the straight 1m trip, and the risk of trouble in-running if he tries to come from behind. Both pose a question mark, but they are relatively small factors in a big field Handicap race like this one.

Weighing it all up, I think 12/1 is a fantastic price for Erzindjan with six places on offer, and he looks to be a great each way bet here. I’m more than happy to play a full 1pt each way, and hopefully, Erzindjan and Ryan Moore can deliver the goods for us.
