I’m back with more free horse racing tips for you this week, and today’s selection runs at Catterick. He has already recorded a C&D win, and at a price of 6/1, I think he’s well worth an each way bet!
If this is the first time that you are reading my content, I’m RacingGav and I have been the resident horse racing expert at Betting.co.uk since March 2025. I provide daily betting tips as well as antepost selections. Away from the betting front, I also produce other content here such as big race trends and educational guides.
If you want to check out some of my educational guides, I’d recommend checking out my guide on Apprentice and Conditional Jockeys, as it’s rather fitting given today’s jockey is an Apprentice. Likewise, today’s horse wears a visor, so I’m also highlighting my educational guide to horse racing headgear.
At the time of writing, bet365 is offering the best horse racing odds for Fortunate Star at 11/2. As well as offering the best price, they also have a generous deal for new customers. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 of free bets. Certainly worth a look if you don’t already have an account.
After finishing third in this race last year, I think Fortunate Star can do even better this time and get his head in front. In this article, I’ll be breaking down my reasoning, so keep reading!
Fortunate Star competed in this race last year and finished third. He made headway over 2f out, took third place inside the final furlong, and was beaten by less than two lengths at the line.
The winner from that day, Birkenhead, lines up again, but Fortunate Star has a weight advantage this time. When you factor in his Apprentice jockey’s claim as well, the advantage increases by another 3lb. Given the margin of defeat was less than two lengths last time, and with less weight Fortunate Star should come home in front. Furthermore, he is only six years old, whereas Birkenhead is nine, so if one of them is slowing down, it’s more likely to be Birkenhead.
Catterick is a quirky track and having previous course form is a huge advantage here. Fortunate Star is already a C&D winner and he has achieved a further four places at this track too.
It may have been nearly two years ago now, but his C&D victory came off a 5lb higher mark, so he is handicapped to strike if he’s on a going day. That performance came on Good to Firm ground, and at the time of writing, the ground is Good, Good to Firm in places, with a dry forecast.
The other advantage Fortunate Star has here is his recent form on the All Weather. Birkenhead is dangerously handicapped off the same mark as his win in this race last year. However, he is yet to win a race after 11 attempts.
In complete contrast, Fortunate Star won three starts later at Haydock, and was just a nose away from following that up at Doncaster. He was sold in October 2025, and moved to Ann Duffield’s yard. Anne has since retired, but Stephen Hannon has taken over her licence. Since moving, he has only been run on the All Weather, and his last five runs produced form figures of 11233. So he’s already in fantastic form, and judging from the formbook, he’s an even better horse on Turf.
Fortunate Star was less than two lengths behind Birkenhead this time last year. However, I think he has enough in his favour to see that form turned around, and the Apprentice jockey on board gives him a 3lb weight advantage. C&D form also gives Fortunate Star a big advantage over his rivals, who are not proven around this quirky track. The fact he is 5lb below his previous win here is a huge bonus too. He is only six years old, and considering his recent great form on the All Weather, I think he’s ready for a big run here.
In terms of negatives, there is always an element of risk when it comes to backing Class 6 Handicappers. As a general rule, these lower-rated horses are less reliable. His record of 3/35 on the Turf and 7/51 overall just goes to prove that. Furthermore, he has a wide draw in stall nine, albeit not as bad as last year, where he drew stall 12.
With everything considered, I think Fortunate Star has a rock solid chance here, and at 6/1, I think he is well worth an each way bet. However, given the negatives highlighted, I’m sticking with half stakes.
