Joanna Hiffernan is a lightly raced filly who has shaped with promise in her early career and now looks ready to take a sizeable step forward tackling 2m for the first time. A half‑sister to the useful stayer Alfred Boucher, stamina is very much in her pedigree, and her latest run at Leicester over 1m4f strongly hinted that she’s crying out for a much stiffer test. She finished second there, beaten seven lengths by Ottoman, but the bare margin doesn’t tell the full story: she was short of room, a touch free early, and conceded first run to the winner before staying on steadily. That was her handicap debut, and she shaped like one who would improve significantly once allowed to roll over a proper staying trip. She acts on good to firm ground, has shown she can travel kindly, and remains unexposed after just four starts. The step up to 2m looks a natural progression, she’s bred for it, she’s hinted at it, and this race provides the perfect opportunity to explore her stamina.

The opposition has depth. Free World is second choice after shaping well in similar company, while Ottoman sets a fair standard based on that Leicester form. But Joanna Hiffernan has the most upside. Her pedigree screams staying power, her latest run was full of encouragement, and she represents a yard that excels with improving middle‑distance and staying types. If she settles early and gets into a rhythm, she can take a big step forward. She’s ready for this trip, and she’s firmly in calculations.

Selection: JOANNA HIFFERNAN 7/2 with BetMGM

7:15pm 1m2f Oddschecker Free Bets Handicap (Class 6) (0–65)

Diane Chasseresse is another filly with deep stamina influences, being a half sister to Alfred Boucher and Joanna Hiffernan, who runs earlier on the card. She has shown flashes of ability in her three qualifying runs, but her latest effort at Windsor over 1m made it clear that she needs further. Slowly away, outpaced, and never able to land a blow, she still kept on late and shaped like a filly learning her job. The way she finished suggested that stepping up to 1m2f, and eventually further, will unlock improvement. Her pedigree backs that up strongly. She’s bred to stay, bred to progress with racing, and bred to improve once stamina becomes the focus. This handicap debut gives her the chance to show it. She acts on fast ground, has shown she can settle, and now gets a more suitable test after three educational runs.

This is competitive for the grade. Beauty Generation and Midnight Media both arrive in form, while Bradbury has been unlucky and will appreciate the extra distance. But Diane Chasseresse is the one with the most untapped potential. Owen Burrows’ yard is excellent with improving fillies, and her novice form suggests she’s better than her opening mark. She’s unexposed, she’s bred for this trip, and she’s ready to show more now handicapping. A big run looks on the cards.

Selection: DIANE CHASSERESSE 5/2 with BetMGM

7:45pm 5f Oddschecker+ Subscription Service Handicap (Class 4) (3yo+ 0–85)

Moulin Booj is ultra consistent and arrives here in excellent form, having finished a close second at Thirsk last time off this very mark. He bumped into a well handicapped rival in Accrual but ran right up to his best, travelling strongly and keeping on well to be beaten just a length. That effort confirmed he’s working his way back to peak form, and the fact he now returns to a slightly less competitive race makes him a major player. He has an excellent record at this time of year, often hitting form in early August, and he’s attempting to win around this date for the fourth season running. He’s effective at 5f, acts on any ground, and the booking of Tom Marquand is a significant positive, a clear sign connections expect a big run.

There are dangers. Grandlad is all speed and dangerous if allowed to dictate, while Forager could bounce back after a tough seasonal return. Michaela’s Boy is also a threat if on a going day. But Moulin Booj’s profile is the strongest. He’s on his last winning mark, he’s running consistently well, and he’s shown he can sustain his effort deep into the final furlong. His Thirsk run was full of promise, and a repeat of that level may well suffice. He’s reliable, he’s in form, and this looks the right race for him. Big chance.

Selection: MOULIN BOOJ 7/4 with BetMGM

8:15pm 6f Oddschecker Fillies' Handicap (Class 5) (3yo+ 0–70)

Thunderous Love was a five‑time winner last season including twice over this C&D, and she finally returned to form at Salisbury last time, finishing second behind Red Snapper. She travelled strongly, hit the front early, and may have just committed a touch too soon, but the run was a clear step forward and suggested she’s ready to strike again. She’s now 8lb below her last winning mark, which makes her extremely well treated if she can reproduce that level. She acts on any ground, stays 6f strongly, and now returns to a track where she has an excellent record. Jonathan Portman’s yard is in good nick, and being reunited with her usual pilot is another positive after a strong run under a claimer last time.

The opposition includes Sugar Sugar, who won at Epsom but isn’t always straightforward, and Melissa Honey, who has been running consistently. Both have claims, but Thunderous Love’s profile is more compelling, she’s well handicapped, she’s rediscovered her spark, and she returns to her favoured C&D. If she builds on Salisbury, she can make amends here. She’s shortlisted, and strongly fancied.

Selection: THUNDEROUS LOVE 11/4 with BetMGM
