Horse Racing Betting Tips - Thursday 6th August 2026 - Newmarket

2:20pm 1m (July) Knight Frank East Anglia Apprentice Handicap (Class 5) (3yo+ 0-70)

Home Hero arrives here on the back of a breakthrough win at Sandown and looks to have every chance of following up. Dropped back to 1m and fitted with a first‑time visor, he showed much improved form, travelling positively, rallying strongly, and refusing to lie down when challenged by Galba. It was a willing, determined performance, the sort that suggests the headgear has sharpened him mentally and helped him focus. He carries a 6lb penalty, but that’s effectively cancelled out by Toby Moore’s 7lb claim, leaving him running off a very workable mark. The visor is retained, the trip remains ideal, and he’s a 3yo who still has scope to progress. His Sandown win wasn’t flashy, but it was honest and professional, and he pulled clear with a progressive type, which gives the form a solid look.

He’s effective at 1m, stays 10f, and acts on good, good to firm and the all weather. The drop in trip clearly helped him settle better, and the way he rallied late suggests he’ll be competitive again if the race sets up similarly. With confidence boosted and conditions in his favour, he’s respected. The dangers include Panelli, who has shaped well enough to be second pick, and Born A Rebel, who arrives off a close C&D third and shouldn’t be underestimated on this quick turnaround. Just Typical is another who can get involved if building on recent promise. But Home Hero’s combination of new headgear, a more suitable trip, a confidence boosting win, and a handy claim makes him the one to beat. A similar performance should see him go in again.

Selection: Home Hero 5/2 with BetMGM

2:55pm 1m (July) Knight Frank Suffolk Heritage Nursery Handicap (Class 5) (2yo 0-75)

Lord Ragnar is building a solid little record and looks ready to take another step forward now upped to 1m. He progressed with each of his three maiden runs, overcoming interference to win at Newcastle in June, quickening nicely and showing a determined attitude. That win had a couple of knocks in behind, but he confirmed the promise when switching to nursery company at Lingfield 24 days ago. There, he again travelled strongly, quickened clear, and was only worn down late by Greek Symphony, beaten a neck off a 1lb lower mark. He ran right to form, pulled clear of the rest, and shaped as though the extra furlong will suit him well. He’s effective at 7f on good ground and the AW, and his profile suggests he’s still improving, exactly what you want from a lightly raced 2yo stepping up in trip.

He concedes 7lb to his rivals, but he’s the one with the most substance to his form, and the rise looks workable. His attitude, consistency, and upward curve all point towards another bold bid. The dangers are headed by Emerald Bay, who seeks a hat trick but takes an 8lb rise that might just stretch him, while High Calibre could fare best of the nursery debutants. Peggy’s Lad is another worth a look after his Newcastle win. But Lord Ragnar’s Lingfield run was the strongest piece of form on show, and with further improvement likely up in trip, he gets the vote.

Selection: Lord Ragnar 10/11 with BetMGM

3:30pm 6f (July) Knight Frank Woodbridge EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (Bands B, C & D) (EBF Qualifier) (GBB Race) (Class 4) (2yo)

Crown And Two looks an interesting newcomer and has enough in his profile to suggest he can run very well on debut. He was an £11,000 yearling before making £37,000 at the breeze ups, a clear sign he moved nicely and caught the eye. By Sergei Prokofiev, a high class sprinter, he’s bred to be sharp, and his dam is an unraced half‑sister to smart winners, notably Saayerr, a Group 2 winning 2yo over 6f, and the prolific Ornate, a fast 5f performer. It’s a pedigree full of speed and early ability. He’s also a half brother to Blazing, useful at 6f, which strengthens the case that 6f will suit him perfectly.

Billy Loughnane is a very positive booking for a debutant, especially in this grade, and the yard can ready one first time. Market clues will be important, but on paper he looks one of the more appealing newcomers. The main form rival is Fast Performer, runner up at Nottingham and open to progress, while several other newcomers have interesting profiles. But Crown And Two stands out as a likely type, well bought, well bred, and with a good jockey booked. He’s one to take seriously on debut.

Selection: Crown And Two 13/8 with BetMGM

4:33pm 2m (July) Knight Frank Eastern Counties Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (Class 4) (3yo+ 0-85)

Koala Rose may still be a maiden after four starts, but she’s been nothing but consistent and now looks ready to take a big step forward upped to 2m. She’s the least‑exposed runner in the field, still learning, still improving, and her latest effort at Newbury, second behind the thriving Green Sky, was comfortably her best yet. That was her handicap debut, over 1m5f, and she shaped like a thorough stayer, travelling smoothly, responding generously, and keeping on strongly all the way to the line. She was beaten 4 lengths, but the winner is progressing rapidly, and Koala Rose ran right to form. She’s effective from 12f to 14f on good to firm, good and the AW, and her profile suggests she’ll relish this new test of stamina. Her mark remains unchanged, which looks lenient given her upward curve, and she’s in excellent hands, the type of yard that improves these staying fillies run by run.

Stepping up to 2m on just her second start in handicap company feels like the right move. She’s been finishing off her races strongly, she settles well, and she has the attitude of a filly who will keep finding. With plenty of weight received all round, she has a major chance of gaining her first victory. The dangers come from the James Owen pair. High Fibre won a hot handicap hurdle last time and ran well on his previous Flat start, though he still has a bit to find with Koala Rose on collateral form. Percy Shelley is consistent in both codes and looks on a workable mark, but his losing run is a concern. Koala Rose is the one with the most potential, the strongest recent run, and the profile of a filly ready to progress again. She earns the vote.

Selection: Koala Rose 11/4 with BetMGM
