Well it’s safe to say that my horse to follow for May, Arc Ole Ole for Dylan Cunha, was a huge success. I felt he had a lot more to come after his Doncaster win, with just a 4lb rise, and I was correct. He went to York in the middle of May and won again, although he was raised 10lb for that performance and he now has an official rating of 85. Even with that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he still has more to show us! Anyway, enough about Arc Ole Ole for now, let’s move onto this month.
Before we dive into June’s horse to follow, let me introduce myself. I’m Gavin Smith, better known as RacingGav on X, where I have built up a following of over 16,000. I have been punting for over 12 years now, and operating under RacingGav since February 2022. I‘ve also been the resident horse racing expert here at Betting.co.uk since March 2025, where the core part of my role is providing free horse racing tips although I do publish other types of content too. Now let’s get into my horse to follow for June, which is ultimately why you’re here!
For my daily tips I usually recommend the bookmaker with the best horse racing odds, but today I want to highlight a brand that does more for racing than simply taking your bets. Meet Betano, the yard sponsor at Olly Murphy’s Warren Chase Stables. Betano has a great deal for new horse racing punters too. If you register and bet £10, you’ll get £30 of free bets, which you’ll receive as 3x £10 bets.
Last year, Jamie Snowden won the valuable Summer Cup at Uttoxeter with a horse called Only The Bold. To have him cherry ripe for the race at the end of June, he used the 3m 1f Franny Blennerhasset Memorial Handicap Chase at Aintree as a stepping stone. Jamie ran Regarde in this year’s renewal of that same race, and I believe his next stop will be the Summer Cup at the end of the month.
If you haven’t seen it already, take a look at Regarde’s Aintree run on 15 May. He raced prominently in the early stages, but the fierce pace was too much for Regarde and he was outpaced from the fourth fence. After that he was largely detached from the main group, but Gavin Sheehan persevered, knowing that he is a strong stayer. He still had a lot to do at three out, but made good headway as those in front started to feel the pace. Ultimately, Regarde went second on the run-in and was staying on well, but had too much ground to make up to catch the winner.
We already know he needs a longer trip. He won over 3m 4.5f at Haydock in March last year and has other strong form over marathon trips, which I’ll come onto in the next section. Uttoxeter can be quite deceptive. It’s an unexpectedly fast and sharp track, where horses often do too much too soon. While you need a horse that can travel, you also need one that stays, as many come unstuck at the business end here. That scenario would play straight into Regarde’s hands, as he will keep on galloping when others get tired.
Towards end of the 2024/25 season, Regarde stepped up to 3m 4.5f at Haydock, where he obliged in great style, staying on powerfully. After that he went to the April meeting at Cheltenham, where he was unfortunate to bump into Ask Brewster, who won well, but Regarde had the rest of the field beaten. Bearing in mind that Ask Brewster went on to win at Chepstow off a 9lb higher mark, then won the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival with another 7lb rise. Ask Brewster is now rated 23lb higher than when Regarde met him, so it’s safe to say he bumped into one that was well handicapped. Regarde has clocked up three more places since then, with overall form figures of 3522.
As mentioned, Jamie won this race last year with Only The Bold, so he knows the type of horse it takes to land this valuable pot. The fact that he has used the same preparation race for Regarde as he used for Only The Bold, surely shows that he is targeting the Summer Cup again. I think it’s the right race for Regarde, a 3m 2f race at a track where stamina often comes to the fore at the business end.
There is still almost a month to go before the Summer Cup at Uttoxeter takes place, so there are no entries yet. However, barring a setback or something else unforeseen, this is almost certainly where Regarde will be heading. Given the calibre of the race, there will be an antepost market nearer the time, but we’ll need to bide our time for the moment.
It’s too far-fetched to say that Regarde can win the Summer Cup, there are simply too many unknowns at this stage. However, Jamie has followed the route that worked for Only The Bold last year, and Regarde fits the same blueprint, so I think it’s a given that Jamie has targeted the race. I say, get Regarde in your tracker now, so that you’re on the ball when the time comes.
