I have switched things up this Saturday with a win only Lucky 15. This is for a couple of reasons, firstly the horses that I’m putting up this week are priced up between 7/2 and 9/2. Secondly, one of the races has just six runners, and only two places on offer. As such, I feel win only is the best way to play.

As it’s a Saturday, there will be two articles today, this Lucky 15 one and a further one with an individual betting tip from York. All four are at shorter prices this week but none of them head the market!
As I write this article, the four selections vary in price from 7/2-9/2. However, despite being shorter odds this week, none of them are actually the current market favourite in their respective races. Chillingham, Aalto and Raammee all have one ahead of them in the market and Epic Poet actually has two. In this article, I’ll break down the reasoning behind each of the four selections and why I think they can win.
Chillingham @ 9/2 - He can be first past the post this time!
This time last year, Chillingham was under the ownership of J Carrick & J Fyffe and trained by Edward Bethell. He came to this race on the second start of his campaign and “won” the race. I bring out the inverted commas as he was actually second past the post. My Dream World just held on to deny Chillingham by a head but that rival was later disqualified for whip misuse.
That run for Chillingham came off a mark of 92 and he produced a RPR of 100. He subsequently produced form figures of 67646 before being sold. His new owner, R M Howard, has placed him with Micky Hammond. Micky has given him two spins over Hurdles, a 112-day break and then a prep run over 1m 2.5f last month. He now steps back up in trip and comes back here off a 6lb lower mark. Becky Smith returns to the saddle for this Female Amateur Jockeys race and the cheekpieces worn last time are replaced with a visor. Everything looks to be in order for a huge run, and hopefully he can deliver.
Aalto @ 9/2 - An eye-catching mark and a great jockey booking!
On Aalto’s second start last summer, he was second to More Thunder (subsequent Group 2 winner and Group 1 placer), off a 6lb higher mark than he is now. He hasn't won since July 2024 but that victory came off a 1lb higher mark than the one he has now. On his only start this season, he was ninth in the Victoria Cup at Ascot. Whilst it was only ninth on paper, that was the Victoria Cup (always very competitive) and he was beaten by less than five lengths.
The worry with Aalto is that the last two seasons have seen his best effort come in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket. Therefore, there is a niggling concern that he could line up for that again. That said, Ryan Moore is riding today which catches the eye. If they wanted a quiet run to bring his mark down further, there are many other jockeys that could have done that job. Whereas I’m sure Ryan is here to win.
His record at York reads 057 but it is worth noting that he was only beaten one and half lengths and three lengths in the fifth and the seventh, with both coming in very competitive big field handicaps, so he certainly acts here. Let’s hope he acts here on the day!
Epic Poet @ 4/1 - A repeat of his Yorkshire Cup would be perfect!
In the 1m 6f Grand Cup Stakes (Listed Race) at York, I’m siding with Epic Poet for David O’Meara. This horse is a really admirable type! Whether it’s Meydan, Riyadh or UK targets being thrown at him, he almost always turns up and gives it a good go. If any horse deserved to land another victory in their career, it would be Epic Poet. Despite many great efforts in defeat, he is without a win since January 2025.
What I find particularly impressive about Epic Poet and specifically linked to today, is that in his five runs at York to date, he has performed his official mark with his RPR on each occasion. In three big handicaps, he has finished fourth, fifth and sixth and then he has finished second and third in the last two renewals of the Yorkshire Cup, which is a Group 2 run over today’s C&D.
If he can replicate the performances produced in the last two Yorkshire Cups (RPR of 112) here, he would have every chance of coming out on top, especially receiving 5lb from the favourite, Al Qareem. He also has Ryan Moore in the saddle and hopefully he can bring out the best of him today.
Raammee @ 7/2 - Is this another Group horse in a handicap?
Sometimes you see a performance which just blows you away and sticks in your mind. One such performance was Sallaal’s victory in the “Nifty 50” Handicap at Epsom last Saturday. He was running off a very high mark of 107, carrying 9st 9lb and he blew his rivals away to win by six and a half lengths. In reality, he won as far as he liked.
Sallaal is owned by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, trained by Roger Varian and ridden by Ray Dawson. The same trio combine here with another four-year-old but this time it is Raammee. The similarities continue as Sallaal raced too keen on his seasonal reappearance and he ended up being a beaten favourite. However, the second time out, he settled significantly better and looked a different horse altogether.
I’m hoping it’ll be a similar outcome for Raammee today, as he too takes his second start of the campaign. That said, he is earlier in his career than Sallaal was, with this being just his fourth start. To help him settle, they bring in the addition of a hood and if that does the trick, he could prove to be better than a handicapper. Hopefully this race is just a stepping stone to bigger and better things for him.
Let’s stick our necks out and go for the wins!
It would have been easy to opt for the each way variation today. With horses at 9/2, 9/2, 4/1 and 7/2, just four places would have seen us double our stake. While it would be slightly better with a couple of winners, it wouldn’t be by much. Similarly, three winners would only pay £118.00 with the usual 50p each way stake. Even a full house would only return £730.19. While you wouldn’t turn your nose up at that, it feels light for four winners in a Lucky 15.
With the win only option, it’s greater risk, but just two winners would potentially see us more than double our outlay. Three winners would return £213.50, and a full house would return almost £1,400.00! I’d be disappointed if we don’t hit at least a couple of winners from today’s selections and of course, the more the merrier.
