Horse Racing Betting Tips - ITV Racing Picks - A Lucky 15 for Saturday 18 April 2026 - Ayr

Publish Date: 17/04/2026
Fact checked by: Jordan Noble
Key Points
  • We add some spice with a Lucky 15 across the ITV Racing action!
  • You can watch all four races by tuning into the ITV Racing coverage!
  • All four horses run at the Scottish Grand National Meeting at Ayr!

It’s Saturday already, which means it’s time for another Lucky 15! There is ITV Racing coverage of the action from Newbury tomorrow, but I’ve selected four horses running at Ayr. As always, these bets are for light entertainment, but if we can add some fun to the day, and potentially get a return for a modest stake, then why not go for it? If nothing else, you’ll get the chance to cheer on four horses as the live action unfolds.

If by any chance you’ve just come across my content for the first time today, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing expert at Betting.co.uk. I publish several articles each week on this website, which are mostly free horse racing tips, but I also cover other aspects of racing including big race trends, and educational guides.

Most of the betting tips published here are for races on the same day, but I do tip for the antepost betting markets as well. If that’s something you enjoy, make sure you check out my selections for the Scottish Champion Hurdle, which is being run today, the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the 2027 Cheltenham Festival, and the 2027 Aintree Grand National.

Betting advice - An each way Lucky 15

  • 13:10 Ayr - Traprain Law @ 5/1 (3 places)
  • 13:45 Ayr - Big John Wayne @ 8/1 (4 places)
  • 14:20 Ayr - Welsh Charger @ 40/1 (3 places)
  • 15:35 Ayr - Git Maker @ 18/1 (5 places)

The best odds are found at bet365!

At the time of writing, bet365 are offering the best horse racing odds for the four runners in our Lucky 15. They are also offering three, four, three and five places for those races respectively. In addition, if you sign up for a new account and bet £10 you’ll get £30 of free bets. What more could you want?

My selections all bring great each way value

When choosing horses for my Lucky 15, I primarily look for value, and that’s exactly what I’ve found. What I mean by that is horses who will outrun their odds rather than those who have a high probability of winning. To add to that, sometimes a place at big odds can return more than a win at a short price, which is why I advise playing most of my Lucky 15s each way.

Traprain Law @ 5/1 - He has a fantastic record when he gets ideal conditions!

Traprain Law is a horse that needs a fast-paced 2m Chase on Soft to Heavy going. If you restrict his form to races where he has run over 1m 7.5f to 2m with his preferred ground conditions, his form figures read 1121. The last time he got those conditions was on his penultimate start and he won that day. He was stretched in trip last time out and on better ground but still ran a very respectable race to finish third.

If the going stays Soft tomorrow, he will relish the return to this trip, and he’s already a C&D winner. He runs off a mark of 134 today, which is 4lb above his highest winning mark, but he has placed second here off 138 previously. This is a tough race, but he only carries 10st 4lb, which is a lovely racing weight, and I think he has every chance of landing this for his connections if the going remains Soft.

Big John Wayne @ 8/1 - He’s unexposed, especially over longer trips!

Big John Wayne won in great style last time out, and I was quite surprised to see him only raised 3lb. I think he’s better than a mark of 119, especially as he is moving up to the 3m trip he has been crying out for.

His trainers, Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, are based in Scotland, so they will be keen to put on a show at this prestigious meeting, and they certainly achieved that on Day 1. They enjoyed winners at 18/1 and 25/1, as well as a second place and two thirds. With the stable in such fantastic form, it further increases my confidence in Big John Wayne. Like Traprain Law, he will want the going to stay on the softer side and if it does, I think he has a huge chance outperforming his 8/1 odds. In fact, I feel strongly enough to advise Big John Wayne as a single bet too.

Welsh Charger @ 40/1 - He races out of the handicap, but 40/1 looks silly!

I previously advised an antepost bet on Tellherthename in the Scottish Champion Hurdle. However, he was priced at 10/1 then, and now he is just a fraction of that price. If his original odds had remained intact, he would be in this Lucky 15, but at his current price of around 10/3, I have decided to look for value elsewhere.

The alternative I've decided on is Welsh Charger. Although he is clearly the outsider in this field, he was fifth in this race last year, and was only headed approaching the final hurdle, beaten by just two lengths. Now he comes back for another crack, and although he is technically 7lb lower this time based on his rating, he races from 8lb out of the handicap. While that's a bit of a blow, it’s only 1lb higher than his mark in this race last year, so it’s not inconceivable that he can run a big race and outrun his 40/1 odds.

Git Maker @ 18/1 - Off the same mark as last time, he’s dangerous!

I fancied Git Maker for the Midlands Grand National last time out, and he ran an absolute cracker. Three horses pulled a long way clear of the rest of the field (47+ lengths) but sadly Git Maker only managed third place, behind Rock My Way and Isaac Des Obeaux.

As I explained in my article that day, he had been waiting a long time for his ideal conditions which are testing ground and a marathon trip, and he finally got it that day. As expected, he outran his odds, but, weakened two out. He ran off a mark of 129 that day and was awarded a RPR of 136. I’d say that was a fair assessment, as he had 7lb in hand, but the two ahead of him had even more.

Despite his great run, the handicapper has left him on an unaltered mark, which looks very generous to me, and the blinkers are retained. Today's 4m trip could be ideal, as the 4m 2f last time just stretched him a bit too much. He needs Soft ground, and as it stands, he'll get it, although the relatively dry forecast is a tiny concern. Likewise, so is the question of whether the Midlands Grand National was hard on him, and if so, it could have left a mark. But at odds of 18/1 , I’m willing to find out!

Will these four selections finish in the frame?

With an each way Lucky 15 bet, just hitting the places can bring a nice return, never mind actually winning. If all four of these horses can finish in the frame, I’ll be a happy man, but each of them has questions to answer:

  • Will Traprain Law get his ideal conditions?
  • Can Big John Wayne improve further by stepping up in trip?
  • Will Welsh Charger handle running from out of the Handicap?
  • Can Git Maker back up his great run in The Midlands Grand National?

Obviously the weather is out of our hands for Traprain Law, but I think the rest of them can answer those questions. The biggest risk is Welsh Charger, as his 40/1 odds suggest, but they were too tempting to ignore. If Welsh Charger can run into a place, the place line would return the same amount as an 8/1 winner. That said, the aim is to see them all run into the frame and anything more is a bonus.
