A few weeks ago I introduced a Lucky 15 across the ITV Racing and it always seems to be popular. As long as you keep enjoying it, I’ll keep producing it, so it’s back again this weekend! I have three selections from the action at Haydock on their Betfair Chase day. The remaining selection then comes from Ascot where they have fantastic action including the 1965 Chase, the Berkshire National and the Ascot Hurdle.
I appreciate some of you may just be reading my content for the first time, so let me introduce myself! I’m Gav, better known as RacingGav here and on X (Twitter). In respect of Betting.co.uk, I’m the resident horse racing expert and that involves providing free to access betting tips. These are both on the day and also include antepost selections too. There are also other types of content that I produce such as educational guides, big race trends and much more. Hopefully, you’ll find something you enjoy!
If you’re quite a casual Saturday punter but you’re looking to get more into the sport of horse racing and betting on it, be sure to check out my educational guides. To name a few I have covered topics such as the UK Handicap System, National Hunt racing as a whole and also other areas such as each way betting.
At the time of writing, three bookmakers are tied on the best odds, with a combined 10,236/1 on offer for my four selections. Of the three bookmakers, the one with the best new customer sign up offer is Betfred! If you bet £10, you’ll get £50 in free bets. Yes, you did read that correctly, they’ll give you £50 in free bets!
As longer term readers will know by now, I’m very much one for betting deeper down into the market in an attempt to find a horse that will outperform their odds. It is pretty rare that you’ll find me betting at the top of the market and certainly not multiple times in a day. Therefore, I have opted for the each way variant of a Lucky 15 again today. Even if all of these horses could just hit the places, we could be looking at a very healthy return. If they could win, even better!
Cormier is a nine year old now and he’ll be ten in the New Year. However, he did miss 553 days between July 2023 and February 2025, as he was on the sidelines. In all honesty, he didn’t look the same horse when he came back. His first two runs over hurdles were poor, beaten 35 and 15.5 lengths respectively. After a further break of 173 days, they switched him to the Flat. He had four poor runs and then with the handicapper’s help, he bounced back to winning ways last time out.
If you look back through his hurdles form, he was rated 139 at his peak and his latest win came off a mark of 134. Now I do appreciate that it was back in 2022 but his handicap mark reflects that, as he is now rated just 121. Off 13lb below his last winning hurdling mark and in the knowledge that he is fit and well after his Flat win, he has to be of interest here. At 14/1, he looks like a lovely opening line for our each way Lucky 15.
Two races later at Haydock, we have the Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle worth £100,000! Unsurprisingly, it has attracted a 17 strong field that looks mightily competitive. Even less surprisingly, Dan Skelton fires two horses at this valuable pot as he looks to continue his great work in building an insurmountable total for the Trainers Championship.
I tipped Joyeux Machin when he was beaten a neck at Uttoxeter two starts back. Being brutally honest, I felt that it was Harry Skelton’s fault. He raced him wide, he hit the front too soon and the horse he headed got back up to win. He was put up 3lb for that, which could have been worse and they gave him a summer break. He returned at Chepstow’s Welsh Racing Festival last month and I thought he ran a very solid race in 7th. I’m sure they left plenty to work on that day and the form has worked out very well. The second and fourth won next time out and the fifth and sixth finished second next time out. Even the eight has won since and so has the unseated French Ship.
Now just 2lb higher than at Uttoxeter, with a reappearance run under his belt, a wind operation, stepped back up to 3m and with Harry Adkins taking 7lb off his back, he could be the answer to this complex riddle of a race.
The case for Martator is simple. He has run over this C&D three times in his career to date and each time he has come home in front. The latest victory over this C&D came in this very race last year and he now returns to defend his crown off a 1lb lower mark. Ned Fox rode him that day claiming 5lb and he does the same again this time around. Arguably Ned ruined the rest of his season, as he won by 11 lengths and the handicapper retaliated with an 11lb rise which he failed to handle.
Like I said, he’s back down to 1lb below his last winning mark and he’s also had a pipe opener at Exeter earlier this month, which should have him spot on for today. He obviously needs to rediscover his best form but the handicapper is giving him every chance and he has a lovely weight of just 10st 5lb on his back, when factoring in Ned’s claim. I’m sure when he came back into training, Venetia had a big red ring around this race on her calendar and he looks a great addition to our each way Lucky 15 at 7/1.
Last but certainly not least, we have another Dan Skelton runner and this time it’s Major Fortune in the 3m 1.5f Handicap Chase back at Haydock. This horse achieved little for Tom Lacey other than placing in a couple of bumpers. However, switched to Dan Skelton he has been a revelation. After one run for Dan he was awarded an opening handicap mark of 81 and he has subsequently climbed the ranks to be as highly rated as 127!
His mark came back down to 121 and he very nearly won a 2m 6.5f Handicap Chase at Leicester, beaten less than a length at the line. After a poor run at Newbury over an inadequate trip, he bounced back with a solid third at Plumpton on his final start of last season. Following a 188 day summer break, he returned at Cheltenham’s “The Showcase” meeting last month. That was over an inadequate 2m4f trip and on unsuitably Good ground. Despite this and the fact he was likely going there in need of the run, he ran a huge race to finish fourth. He was only beaten 7.5 lengths and without a peck on landing after the last, he could have been even closer.
Dropped a further 1lb to a mark of 119, he looks handicapped to strike. When you consider that along with the run under his belt, the step up in trip and the softer ground, I think he could be perfectly brought to the boil here for this £50,000 handicap. He has just 10st 9lb on his back and he also gets the services of Harry Skelton in the saddle. I have great respect for Famous Bridge and Whistle Stop Tour here but they have to give a lot of weight away to Major Fortune and I’m not sure they’ll be able to do it!
When placing a Lucky 15 such as this, you want horses that have a great chance of at least running into the frame. With the way a Lucky 15 bet is put together, multiple places alone, especially at good prices, can still produce a lovely return. Obviously, if these horses were all to go out and win, it’s a whole different story in terms of the potential returns and that is what dreams are made of.
I can genuinely say that all four of these horses have a superb chance of running into the places, and there is plenty of value in their odds too. I appreciate it’s a big ask for all four to win but we don’t need that to happen to enjoy a healthy profit today. Whatever happens, these four runners should give us plenty of fun today as we watch them in action.
Below you will see some of the fantastic free bet offers currently available from our recommended bookmakers. Make sure to check them out, there’s a lot of value to be had from these deals, and the opportunity to use your free bets for today's Lucky 15, or anything else that catches your eye.
