The curtain comes down on the National Hunt season at Sandown today and hopefully we can send the season off with a bang! Three of the selections for this Lucky 15 come from Sandown’s bet365 Jump Finale meeting. The other selection then comes from the King Richard III Cup Handicap on the Flat over at Leicester. Therefore, this Lucky 15 should have something for everybody’s taste!
You may just be finding my content on Betting.co.uk for the first time today and if so, then welcome! Since March 2025, I have been the resident horse racing expert here and the key part of my role is providing free horse racing tips. These come in various styles such as betting tips on the day, antepost selections or even articles like this where we have a Lucky 15 to add some fun!
It’s not only betting tips that you will find here from me though, I also provide big race trends, educational guides and other types of content such as Trainers To Follow for the following month. If you’re looking to learn more about horse racing, then be sure to check out my educational guides. The logical one to start with is Betting Fundamentals but if you're ready for something a bit more technical, then the Impact Of Track Bias is a great place to start.
At the time of writing, bet365 are offering the best horse racing odds with a combined price across the four horses in our Lucky 15 of 1,851/1. In addition to that, they are offering five, four, three and four places respectively across the four races which is superb value. Particularly in the Oaksey Chase (14:20 Sandown) where there are only seven runners. Last but not certainly not least, new customers who bet £10 get £30 of free bets. What more could you want!
With a Lucky 15 bet, the returns can soon start to mount up, even just for the horses running into the places. This is particularly the case when you reach the treble and four fold lines of the bet. However, we of course want the maximum possible returns and for that, we need winners. Whilst I believe all four can run into the places, I also believe they can win their races if the necessary luck is on their side on the day. In this article, I break down why I think this for each of the runners in the Lucky 15 bet.
Minella Yoga ticks a lot of boxes for me in this bet365 Novices’ Championship Final Handicap Hurdle. The first eye-catching point is that in the last five renewals, three have been won by four-year-olds. Herbiers won it in 2021, Under Control won it in 2023 and then Give It To Me OJ won last year’s renewal. Despite being a handicap, four-year-olds get an 8lb allowance here, which is huge, especially at the end of the season. Therefore despite being the highest rated horse lining up by 3lb, he actually only carries 11st 9lb rather than the 12st 0lb top weight.
It is also worth noting that Paul Nicholls trained the winners of this in 2019 and 2022 with Getaway Trump and Knappers Hill. He has also had placed runners in two of the other recent renewals with Flic Ou Voyou finishing second in 2021 and Fasol finishing third in last year’s race. Therefore, it is clear to see that he tends to target horses at this £100,000 prize. After his Newbury win, he was talked about as a Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1) juvenile but after his defeat next time out on Trials Day, they look to have changed their target to this valuable handicap. On Trials Day, he was beaten just three lengths by Maestro Conti, receiving 3lb. The fact that Maestro Conti is now rated 143, could mean that Minella Yoga is very well handicapped off 132 and even more so effectively running off 124 today!
All of this is before factoring in that he is a progressive type that is 3-4 and still largely unexposed. This £360,000 purchase could have a big future ahead of him in time but I think he can land this £100,000 handicap along the way. At the very least, I’d expect him to be going very close and I’d be quite shocked if he wasn’t in the frame.
In October of the 2024 season, Strike Red won the Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap (Heritage Handicap) at York off a mark of 93, producing a RPR of 105. His mark was subsequently hiked up to 99 and whilst he ran creditable races in defeat, he found that too high to record enough success. Worryingly, that trend has continued and whilst he did go very well to finish second in the Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap), he has remained winless since.
It is worth noting though that after that rise to a mark of 99, he spent most of last year’s Flat season with a mark around the mid 90’s and it was only at the backend of the season that the handicapper really began to relent. His final three runs saw his mark drop significantly from 93 to 86, which has left him looking dangerously handicapped, especially considering his last win came off 7lb higher.
He was given a 156-day break from November 2025 to earlier this month, where he returned at Newcastle over on the All Weather. He was expected to improve for the run, so he certainly ran beyond expectations when he was only beaten one length at the finish in third place. They used a similar race at Southwell to tee him up for today’s race last season and he then went on to finish second here. Returning off a 12lb lower mark and with an eye-catching run in third last time out (tough to come from behind that day), I think he can go one better than last year here.
Last year, Willie Mullins was pushing hard for the National Hunt Trainers Championship and he subsequently ran four horses in last year’s renewal. He ended up having the 1-2-4 with Gaelic Warrior, Appreciate It and Gentleman De Mee. Gaelic Warrior went on to win the race comfortably and this season he’s gone on to win the John Durkan and more importantly, the Cheltenham Gold Cup! He also placed in the King George and the Irish Gold Cup. Gaelic Warrior now finds himself rated 176 and there certainly isn’t another like that in this year’s renewal.
In fact, this is a very poor Grade 2 with the top rated horse being Blow Your Wad, with a handicap mark of 151. The rest of the runners are then rated between 129 and 146. Despite having 5lb to find on official ratings, it’s Matterhorn that I’m siding with here, another Paul Nicholls runner. Blow Your Wad is certainly the one to beat but I’d rather chance Matterhorn at a bigger price. Especially as Blow Your Wad has had a busy campaign with six runs so far, all of which being in tough handicaps. In complete contrast, Matterhorn has only had one run in December and then another earlier this month over an inadequate trip, which looks to have been a pipe opener for today. He should therefore be significantly fresher here and that could prove to be crucial.
The conditions here also look to be perfect for Matterhorn, who loves quick ground. On Good or Good To Firm ground, he has recorded six wins and three seconds from just 13 starts, which is a phenomenal strike rate. He has never raced beyond 2m4f but he stayed on well at Uttoxeter over 2m4f and he was shouldering 12st that day. Paul Nicholls is convinced he wants this 2m 6.5f trip and I agree with him. His sire - Martaline has produced many top-class stayers over jumps and hopefully Matterhorn has inherited some of those genes! In a race that lacks depth, he should be involved in the finish and I believe he can win it.
Last but certainly not least, we have Road To Home in the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) for Willie Mullins. He was expected to be Willie Mullins’ only runner in the Scottish Grand National last weekend but he was withdrawn when the ground conditions deteriorated. This race is an ideal replacement for him, so it’s no surprise to see Willie Mullins divert him here instead.
Road To Home is only seven and he has just 11 runs under rules to his name, with only five of those coming over fences. Therefore, he is still unexposed, especially over staying trips and there could be plenty more to come off a UK handicap mark of 137. He has been progressive in all five starts over fences with increasing RPR figures of 121, 128, 131, 135 and 142. That career best on his latest start came in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham over 3m 2.5f where he looked the winner before Ask Brewster battled back to deny him by just a neck at the line, with the pair pulling clear of the field.
Road To Home is 6lb higher today and Ask Brewster opposes off a 7lb higher mark, which sees Road To Home with a 1lb swing at the weights for a neck defeat. He was going to run over 4m in the Scottish Grand National, so they clearly think he’ll love a bigger test of stamina and I agree. I think he could absolutely relish this additional two furlongs here compared to the Kim Muir at Cheltenham. Likewise, I think he’ll love this quicker ground as well. In the same way he was going to be up at Ayr, he is the sole contender here for Willie Mullins and the one dart could well be enough as I think Road To Home has a huge chance here. Patrick Mullins has been aboard in three of his last four starts, getting a tune out of him in each and he retains the ride here for his father. His form gives him every chance of going close and I think the unexposed and progressive profile, step up in trip and quick ground can see him find the improvement to win this.
At the above prices, all four horses running into the places in their respective races would see us walk away from Saturday’s action with over treble our outlay in our pockets. That would be a lovely result in itself but naturally I am dreaming of scooping the lot. For a modest £15 stake (for a 50 pence each way Lucky 15), four winners would provide us with a return of over £1,700!
I’d actually be quite shocked and disappointed if any of these runners couldn’t finish in the frame baring mishaps. Therefore, I have high hopes of this being a profitable bet for us. However, if they can all perform how I hope they can and also have the necessary rub of the green on the day, I think all four could win their races.
We have had some fantastic returns on some of these Lucky 15 bets and hopefully it is more of the same today, could today be the day that we land the full house though? I think it could be!
We have compiled five of the betting offers for horse racing that our bookmaker partners have available for you right now. There is plenty of value to be had with these deals, so be sure to take the time to check them out!
