This week, the ITV Racing coverage is split between the Northumberland Plate Festival at Newcastle and the Summer Music Saturday at York. However, all four of my selections for this week’s Lucky 15 come from Newcastle, including a horse in the feature race!

Fantastic odds at William Hill!

As I write this article, William Hill are offering the best horse racing odds for our Lucky 15, at of 171,563/1. This could be the big one!

I’m often found searching for selections at big prices, deeper in the market. And I’ve excelled myself today with four selections at double figure prices, including two at 28/1. In the rest of this article, I’ll break down the logic behind each of the horses.

Korker @ 28/1 - This slow starter should relish the stiff seven furlongs!

Korker has spent the majority of his career racing over 5f or 6f, but as he’s grown older he is routinely hampered by starting slow, so connections have decided to try him over 7f. I wasn’t convinced he would stay initially, but last time out at Chester he proved his stamina. In fact, Korker clocked the fastest final furlong in that race, at 12.05.

With the way he stayed on over 7f at Chester, I think trying him over this stiffer 7f at Newcastle is a good idea. He has acquired an unfortunate habit of blowing the start, but he will have plenty of time to recover here if he’s good enough. Interestingly, his stable won this race last year with Native Warrior, so they know what it takes.

Korker won off a mark of 102 in October 2023, and last October he was second at Doncaster off a mark of 96 in October. To me, he looks dangerously handicapped today, running off 90, which is effectively reduced to 85 with Jack Nicholls claiming 5lb. If he can get a clear run along the favoured near side rail, he can outrun his odds of 28/1.

Artisan Dancer @ 28/1 - Back down to his last winning mark, he’s being overlooked!

Artisan Dancer ran at this meeting in 2024 and finished 16th, then last year he placed 12th, so I get why he is being overlooked today. However, the first time was in the Northumberland Plate, and he’s simply not good enough for that level. The latter was in today’s race, the Northumberland Vase, and he was far from disgraced. He may have finished 12th, but he was only beaten five and a half lengths, and he raced on the unfavourable far side, so I think it can be marked up.

If we look at his form away from Newcastle, he won at Southwell as recently as March. Southwell has the same Tapeta surface, and that race was over the same 2m 0.5f trip as today’s race. He won off a mark of 85 that day, and five runs later, he is back down to the same mark. Given his last three races have been on Turf, I wonder if he has been campaigned that way to bring his mark down for this valuable race. In April his trainer was quoted as saying that he was probably a pound or two too high in the handicap, and those three turf runs have seen him drop 3lb.

I wouldn’t be shocked if he wins, and I can easily see him outrunning his odds of 28/1 anyway. While trainer Charlie Johnston hasn’t won this race previously, his father did back in 2020. with Mondain. Interestingly, it was a very similar scenario, with a classy horse coming here for this consolation race instead of the big one.

Dancing In Paris @ 16/1 - He can go one better than last year despite an extra 4lb!

Last year, we saw a fantastic late tussle between Dancing In Paris and Spirit Mixer. Sadly one of them had to lose and it was Dancing In Paris by a neck. The pair raced off level weights that day and will meet again today, however, with a 2lb advantage, Dancing In Paris is weighted to come out on top. It’s also worth mentioning that the pair of them pulled more than three lengths clear of the third placed horse that day.

Spirit Mixer had previously finished second in this race in 2022, and came 9th in 2024, so he already had experience. In complete contrast, it was only the second time Dancing In Paris had tried this trip. He proved his stamina that day, he is two years younger than Spirit Mixer, and far less exposed. I think he can go one better this year.

Trainer Ian Williams is a shrewd operator, and I like the way he has given Dancing In Paris just one run over 1m 4f this campaign to blow the cobwebs away. Now that he is race fit, he steps back up in trip, and comes to challenge for this valuable £150,000 pot, with £77,310 going to the winner!

Annaf @ 11/1 - A Group horse in a Handicap, with strong C&D form!

Annaf is a Listed, Group 3 and Group 2 (KSA) winner, and he was only a neck from winning the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes on this card last year. He has a fantastic record overC&D, having never finished out of the first four.

Once rated 114, he’s now down to just 99 and he definitely looks handicapped to strike. Combine that with his form at higher levels, his love for this course, and a nice draw in stall 13, there is an awful lot to like.

You may want to sit down for this part!

I often say that I’d happily take four places for our Lucky 15 bets. At the prices advised, that’s often a healthy enough return on its own. However, with four selections at value prices this week, even three places would see us with a decent return and if we landed four, we’d be looking at a 42x return.

Now this is the part where you may want to sit down. If we were to have a full house of winners (based on the prices at William Hill) it would return £105,929.73. Of course, this isn’t very likely to come to fruition, but it’s not impossible. The only way it’ll be impossible is if you don’t place the bet!
