The UK is gearing up for the Grand National at Aintree on Saturday, and it is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the sporting calendar.
More than 150,000 enthusiasts are expected to pass through the turnstiles, while the blue riband race will generate an estimated TV audience of 600 million.
But it’s on betting sites where there is likely to be frenzied interest. The finest horse racing betting platforms will plug an array of enticing offers, and there will be competitive prices offered at many of the best horse racing betting sites, persuading casual and seasoned punters to part with their money. And one of the new operators on the block, Midnite, is ready to get involved.
Although the Grand National is considered a lottery due to the number of runners that complete the daunting four-mile course, the race creates a huge betting spike. Figures released by the University Campus of Football Business (UFCB) revealed that the Grand National is a bit of an outlier from a betting perspective.
Indeed, it is believed that up to £350 million is wagered on the race each year, while it is thought the Grand National generates up to 6x more in betting volume than the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Within this, the Grand National usually attracts more than 700% in betting volume than its closest rival, again often Cheltenham’s showpiece race.
And Ben Cullen, Midnite’s Head of Risk, explained what makes the Grand National so special from a betting angle, telling SBC News:
“It’s certainly the biggest race of the year still, attracting both seasoned punters along with the customers where this may be their only bet of the year.
“This race is often a family affair, along with everyone getting involved and watching the race unfold together.”
Bookmakers are always throwing themselves at punters with a range of tantalising offers, such as free bets and matched deposits in the run-up to the big race. Midnite also has an assiduous place in plan to tempt bettors, as Cullen explained.
He continued:
“Our marketing strategy for the Aintree Festival and Grand National will remain broadly consistent with our wider approach, with a clear focus on both acquisition and retention.
“Across the first two days of the Festival, we will lead with strong, headline Bet & Get offers, supported by Extra Place strategy and a series of Super Boosts. These mechanics are designed not only to attract new customers but also to drive ongoing engagement throughout the week.
“For Grand National Day itself, our approach will be measured. While we will still offer an Extra Place promotion on the feature race, we will avoid running Bet & Get offers or overly aggressive promotions. This reflects the nature of the event, where a large proportion of customers are typically once-a-year bettors who engage specifically for the Grand National but don’t return consistently to the sportsbook.”
Midnite has a concerted plan in place to deal with the influx of bets placed for the Grand National. This means ensuring customers get the support they need and that they can make fast withdrawals.
Indeed, avoiding unnecessary mishaps will be firmly on Midnite’s mind. For example, in 2022, the bet365 website crashed after the Grand National, preventing punters from withdrawing their winnings.
SkyBet, William Hill, and Ladbrokes also experienced similar problems, but Midnite will be hoping things run smoothly without any glitches.
