Welcome to another article! I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing expert here at Betting.co.uk. If you’re not familiar with my content here already, my articles are predominately based around betting tips whether that be for racing on the day or antepost.
In addition to the betting tips, I also produce other types of content such as educational guides, big race trends and monthly results updates. As you are about to read now, I’ll also be writing about other horse racing topics, and diving into some non-breaking news stories.
If you’re not familiar with my educational guides, they are well worth checking out. As a couple of examples, I have one on the UK Handicap System and I also have another on National Hunt Racing as a whole. With all of the various types of content that I produce, there should hopefully be something for everyone!
Today’s bookmaker recommendation is something a bit different! I’m usually promoting traditional bookmakers but Spreadex is a fast-paced, exciting alternative to traditional fixed odds sports betting. If you are not already familiar, they are well worth checking out, especially as they have an incredible sign up offer currently. If you bet £10, you’ll get £60 of free bets. Well worth considering if you don’t already have an account here.
Complacency kills. If you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backwards. Unfortunately for Paul Nicholls at present, he’s now moving in the wrong direction, and I’ll be taking a look at the potential reasons for that.
During his time as a racehorse trainer Paul Nicholls has dominated the modern era of National Hunt racing in the UK. He has won the Trainers Championship fourteen times including 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23. However, in 2023/24, a lot changed!
In 2023/24, together with his best horses, Willie Mullins joined in with the Paul Nicholls vs Dan Skelton battle, and beat them both. In doing so, he was the first Irish-based trainer to win the UK Championship since Vincent O’Brien seventy years prior!
For Paul Nicholls his horse racing dominance was over, and the reign of Willie Mullins had begun! That reign extended into the 2024/25 season, as Willie once again denied Dan Skelton the title with another late surge.
There are many factors that have contributed to the regression of Paul Nicholls and Ditcheat in recent years, but there is one in particular that I’m keen to explore. And that is whether Paul Nicholls has inadvertently contributed to his own downfall.
Paul Nicholls had Dan Skelton as his assistant trainer for nine years before Dan left to set up his own yard in 2013. Notably, Harry Fry and Harry Derham both took on the assistant trainer role at Ditcheat before launching their own training careers too.
Perhaps these three flying the nest was inevitable as they pursued training careers of their own. However, with each assistant trainer lost, Paul Nicholls gained a new rival in the UK. It has now reached the point where Dan Skelton is not just competing against Paul Nicholls, he is outperforming him. Before we move on, imagine for a moment the firepower of all four of those trainers combined…
Unlike Paul Nicholls, Willie Mullins has built a solid team around him over the years, and kept them with him as he has gone from strength to strength. He has two assistant trainers, Patrick Mullins and David Casey. Patrick Mullins is his son, and David Casey is a former champion National Hunt Jockey.
David Casey started riding for Willie Mullins in 1994, so he knew how things worked at Closutton, and how Willie liked things to be done. Unlike Dan Skelton, Harry Fry and Harry Derham, David Casey reportedly has no intention of going down the training route himself. Therefore, his 30 years of service at Closutton look set to continue.
Similarly, Patrick has been a key part of the Closutton team, and ultimately, you would envisage he will take over the reins at Closutton one day, when Willie finally decides he has had enough. See the difference? Where the Nicholls empire has splintered, Closutton is bigger and stronger than ever, and continuing to grow.
Paul Nicholls dominated British Jumps racing for many years, but the rise of Willie Mullins, and Ditcheat graduate Dan Skelton, has ended that era. I genuinely do believe that by developing his own domestic rivals, Nicholls has contributed to his own downfall. At the same time, Willie Mullins has kept his inner circle intact, and has seen continued success and growth.
If Paul Nicholls can rebuild a solid team, and maintain that team into the future, perhaps he can bounce back. However, losing more horses this summer to an array of trainers, including Dan Skelton, must be a big blow. Even more so when some of those horses like Kabral Du Mathan and Act Of Innocence go out and win well too. Would Paul Nicholls have enjoyed the same success with those horses, or have they improved for leaving Ditcheat? We’ll never know, but it certainly doesn’t help his cause.
