Horses To Follow At The Tingle Creek Meeting Sandown: Betting Tips & Predictions

Publish Date: 05/12/2025

Sandown Stars on Show: 3 strong NAP horses to follow.

Sandown stages one of its most anticipated cards of the season this Saturday, and the meeting has all the makings of a day that could reshape several divisions as we head into the heart of the jumps season. From rising stars putting their unbeaten records on the line to seasoned Grade 1 operators looking to reassert their dominance, every race feels loaded with significance. The Claremont Novices’ Hurdle, Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, and the iconic Tingle Creek Chase each bring their own storylines, form angles, and potential turning points for horses with major spring ambitions. We’ll see whether Sober Glory can confirm the deep promise of his Chepstow debut, if Lulamba can cement himself as Britain’s leading two-mile novice chaser, and whether Il Etait Temps can once again stamp his authority on the elite two-mile scene and throw his hat fully into the ring for the Champion Chase. Add in intriguing challengers, weight angles, pace dynamics, and the ever-testing Sandown fences, and this card delivers. It’s a day where reputations can be enhanced, questions can be answered, and future festival markets could be shaken up, all under the spotlight of one of jump racing’s most historic stages.

Sober Glory Set to Stamp His Class in Listed Company

Harry Cobden takes the ride on Sober Glory, and it’s incredibly difficult to look past him as the one they all have to beat in this Listed contest. Still unbeaten in four starts under rules, plus a point-to-point victory for good measure, he already gives the impression of a horse destined for significantly bigger stages later in the season. Everything he has done so far suggests a serious engine, a professional attitude, and a level of raw ability that sets him apart from the typical novice at this time of year.

His hurdles debut at Chepstow was nothing short of outstanding. Sent off a warm order and travelling strongly throughout, he absolutely obliterated the field over two miles, cruising home by 12 lengths from Kadastral, with another 14 lengths back to the third. The ease with which he quickened away turning in was deeply impressive, and Ben Jones barely needed to get serious with him. It was the sort of performance that not only confirms his well-regarded reputation but also screams graded potential. Horses simply do not win novice hurdles in that manner unless they have an abundance of talent.

That said, this Listed race is no formality, and there are a couple of other last-time-out winners worthy of consideration. Shabalk d’Herm, representing the always-dangerous Twiston-Davies yard, showed a determined attitude to get up by a neck last time out. He clearly possesses a bit of grit, but with two runs already under his belt he may need to take another sizeable step forward to trouble a horse of Sober Glory’s calibre.

Soldier Reeves, trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by Harry Skelton, also brings winning form into the contest. He scored on debut despite weak market support, hinting that he may be better than the yard initially expected. He shapes like the type who will improve for the experience, and of the opposition he is probably the most likely to make the favourite pull out something extra. The Skeltons have an excellent record in developing young hurdlers, and it would be no surprise if Soldier Reeves emerges as a smart prospect in his own right.

Even so, Sober Glory has the profile of a top-class horse in the making. The ease with which he travelled at Chepstow, coupled with the authority he showed when quickening away, suggests there is plenty more under the bonnet. His jumping was genuinely superb for such an inexperienced horse, consistently gaining lengths at his obstacles and maintaining rhythm throughout. Having such a natural, fluent jumping technique is a huge asset at this level and is likely to stand him above the rest here.

If he produces anything close to a repeat of that Chepstow display, he should take this on Saturday with a degree of conviction. Win or lose, he appears to be a horse firmly on the rise, and if his progression continues, there is every chance he’ll be lining up in Grade 1 company sooner rather than later.

Lulamba Set for Major Test in High-Quality Novice Chase

1:50 Sandown1m7½f (1m7f99y) Betfair Henry VIII Novices' Chase (Grade 1)

This represents a meaningful test for Lulamba with the likes of Be Aware, an excellent second to July Flower despite giving weight away last time at Cheltenham. The Sam Thomas-trained horse will also contribute depth to the contest with Lump Sum adding chase debut wins to his records, and he will no doubt make this a proper test. Alnilam will likely be part of a hot pace here as well with Sean Bowen off the front. Overall this is a very nice novice chace and if Lulamba can come through this test with flying colours hes clearly the best of the UK contingent. He looks every inch a natural chaser and, receiving the weight-for-age allowance, he should really be winning even over this minimum trip in my opinion. His performance at Exeter was good, he jumped well throughout and quickly put clear daylight between himself and the rest. With the weight advantage for the Arkle second favourite he should be able to win, even though I think hed be better over further in time I think he'll be good enough here getting weight.

Il Etait Temps Poised to Strike in Fascinating Sandown Clash

3:00 Sandown1m7½f (1m7f99y) Betfair Tingle Creek Chase (Grade 1)

The big question is which version of Jonbon will turn up. He’s a very fair price for a horse with outstanding form at Sandown, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he bounced back and went close. Il Etait Temps is the odds-on favourite after beating Jonbon well when they last met here, and he made an excellent reappearance at Clonmel over 2m5f, winning with plenty in hand. Like Jonbon, he seems to be firmly on the “we don’t like Cheltenham” train, and he’s clearly got a major chance, I think Willie has worked wonders with this horse and I'm feeling hes going to show hes an extremely talented on horse on top of what weve already seen from him. For me hes the bet to have here. As much as I'm also a fan of L’Eau Du Sud for team Skelton and we’ve seen how good Dan Skelton is at improving horses, Panic Attack being a prime example, he's going to have to seriously improve again to beat Il Etait Temps here. His jumping in the Shloer at Cheltenham was electric yes, and he’s already a course winner and I think the jumping test here, particularly the railway fences, will really suit him but it also suites the favourite and with Paul Townend over for the one ride I'll happily follow in here and Willie can pick up his first UK grade 1 of the season.

Keep it simple on a Saturday

A proper days racing ahead

Overall Saturday at Sandown has all the ingredients to be a pivotal day in the season for the Champion Chase and Arkle as well as giving us an idea on one exciting young novice with three standout horses looking to underline their class on a high-quality card. Sober Glory appears to hold Listed level well within his grasp after a devastating hurdles debut and can take another confident step toward graded company. Lulamba, armed with a weight-for-age advantage and the profile of a serious chaser in the making, faces his toughest test yet in the Henry VIII but has every chance to come out as the UK’s leading Arkle hope if winning this well. Then in the feature Tingle Creek, Il Etait Temps brings the most compelling recent form and looks poised to confirm his superiority if producing the same level he showed on his return and on his last start here.

If the racing unfolds as expected, Sandown may become a favourites day and provide a glimpse of future Grade 1 winners across all divisions towards the back end of the season.

Every week I will be analysing the weekends horse racing betting and comparing the latest betting odds and finding us the best value horse racing tips for the weekend. As well as that I will be aiming to identify potential horses from the same weekends action that may go onto to make big impacts in the big spring festivals such as the 2026 Cheltenham Festival.
