Could a former UFC Champion be waiting in the wings to save the event?
The much-anticipated Jake Paul Vs Tommy Fury bout has been cancelled less than two weeks prior to the event according to recent reports. Initial reports suggest that the reason for the fight's cancellation is that the 22-year-old Fury suffered an injury in training and will be unable to compete.
Originally scheduled for December 18th, the bout was set to headline an event staged at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, culminating an over year-long rivalry between the pair.
The news comes less than a week after Fury and Paul traded insults at a press conference that has already gained infamy thanks to Fury's father and coach, John Fury, making a number of x-rated remarks regarding both Paul and his girlfriend.
However, Fury's removal from the fight does not mean that The Problem Child will no longer be in action on December 18th. According to the British newspaper The Sun, Paul's most recent opponent, former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley will take Fury's place in the main event.
The news of Fury's injury likely couldn't have come at a better time for Woodley, who has long campaigned for a rematch with Paul after he was defeated over the course of eight rounds by the social media star back in August.
Woodley has continued training in the sweet science since his defeat, and has even gone so far as to have 'I Love Jake Paul' tattooed on his finger; a condition of a bet made between the two fights before their first encounter in the ring.
Despite the former UFC star honouring his end of the bargain, Paul remarked after the fight that he was looking towards new challenges, and announced that he would instead be fighting Fury shortly afterwards.
Fury has yet to make an official statement regarding his injury, though it is sure to provide the notorious troll Paul with ample ammunition for his social media tirades in the coming weeks.
