Brilliant Bumrah Takes 6-19 | Highlights - England v India | 1st Men's Royal London ODI 2022

Indian captain Rohit Sharma (76 not out) scored a half-century to lead his team to thrash England by ten wickets at the Oval on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah recorded a career-best performance of 6-19 in the first one-day international of the three-match series.

Along with fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan (31 not out), Sharma knocked off the victory target, sparing only 31.2 overs. Early in the match, Bumrah's in-swinger rattled Jason Roy's stumps before deceiving Joe Root two balls later, putting England in to bat. Both Root and Roy failed to get off the mark.

Mohammed Shami (3-31) dismissed Ben Stokes with a golden duck in the following over. Bumrah then sent out Jonny Bairstow (7) and Liam Livingstone (0), resulting in England reeling at 26-5.

"Looking at the overhead conditions and the pitch, the toss was a right call to make. We used the conditions upfront really well," said Rohit. "There was some swing and seam upfront, and we exploited them well."

This is the first time since the 1983 World Cup final that Indian seamers took all 10 wickets in an ODI on English soil.

Newly crowned Captain Jos Buttler (30) and Moeen Ali (14) led England to a brief recovery before being dismissed ahead of a 35-run ninth-wicket stand between David Willey (21) and Brydon Carse (15). The hosts were bowled out in 25.2 overs. It was the lowest in 50-over cricket against India since their previous lowest of 125 at Jaipur in 2006.

"We have some guys in the form of their lives in Tests coming here and getting nicked off," said Buttler. "Jasprit is a great bowler to come up against. He has bowled fantastically well today and deserves these figures.

"I won't be panicking... in the last seven years our batting has been our super strength in ODI cricket and the guys in the teams are some of the best players to ever play the format for England so we don't want to panic."

'Very tough day to take'

India won the first ODI with 188 balls to spare. They performed better than in the Edgbaston Test, bowling three slips during the powerplay. Butler praised his opponents for the win, saying he was "surprised".

“Very tough day to take, but we’ve got to dust ourselves down quickly," he said. "Little surprised by the movement, bit muggy. India exposed the conditions superbly. They have bowled really well in the powerplay. It is something we need to discuss and work out.”

Butler was even more impressed by Bumrah’s bowling, praising him over team captain Sharma before lamenting his team's loss.

“Jasprit is a great bowler to come up against," he said. "He has bowled fantastically well today and deserves these figures.

Team England bowlers had to endure their inexperience while defending a meagre score in the second innings. Butler said what his team had to face was not ideal.

“It is never easy when you are forced to try and force wickets. Isn’t nice when your bowlers have to take as many risks and when you ask so much out of them,” he said.

The second match of the series will be held on Thursday at Lord's.
