Allwyn UK has announced a change at the top following Andria Vidler’s decision to step down as CEO. The news was confirmed on Wednesday (August 19) by the UK National Lottery operator, and they have replaced her with gambling industry veteran Phil Walker on a short-term basis.
Walker is poised to start his new post on September 7. Vidler, on the other hand, will remain in an advisory role with Allwyn until the end of October to ensure a smooth transitional period as the company gears up for its next growth phase.
Having served as CEO since October 2023, Vidler presided over a swathe of changes at Allwyn. Aside from obtaining the fourth National Lottery licence during her tenure, the company completed significant technological and infrastructural updates for its 43,500 retail partners, as well as upgrades to its website and app.
Added to that, the operator welcomed a million new active digital users, launched new scratchcard games, and introduced the Powerball lottery jackpot to UK players.
The latter was telling, as the agreement between the UK Lottery and its US counterpart, the Multi-State Lottery Association, saw a £300 million jackpot handed out last month, representing the biggest jackpot awarded to UK players.
After passing these major milestones, Vidler and Allwyn Chairman, Justin King, decided this was the right time for her to step down. King acknowledged Vidler’s achievements during an “intense period of change”, but maintained the foundations had been laid to create future growth.
Walker will now step into the breach, and his extensive experience in the industry counts for a lot. Most recently, Walker served as a Non-Executive Director at City Gaming Limited.
But it was his four-year spell at William Hill that marked him out as a suitable replacement for Vidler. He held down the roles of UK Managing Director and Online Director, delivering significant revenue and profit growth across the digital and retail divisions. As a self-confessed lottery player, Walker admits he is looking forward to the new challenge, and he hopes to drive serious change.
He said:
“I am excited and proud to be taking up the baton from Andria and joining such a vital national institution at this important stage of its growth journey.
“As a long-standing National Lottery player, I know first-hand the difference it makes to communities across the UK, and this is a huge part of what attracted me to the role. It will be a real honour to build on the progress already made.”
Vidler described leading Allwyn as a “huge privilege”. Aside from reflecting on her accomplishments, she sent a heartfelt parting message to her colleagues.
She said:
“The last three years have required enormous focus and commitment from colleagues right across the business, and I’m proud of what we have delivered together.
“Transforming the National Lottery is a marathon, not a sprint, and The National Lottery in a stronger position to keep delivering for the nation, this feels like the right moment for me to pass on the baton. I wish Justin, Phil, and everyone at Allwyn the very best for the future — and look forward to becoming a player again myself.”
The National Lottery, which has awarded over £103 billion in prizes since its launch in 1994, continues to make strides. Now, the onus will be on Walker to build upon the good work carried out by his predecessor.
