Everton have confirmed they have put pen to paper on a lucrative multi-million sponsorship deal with CMC Markets to replace Stake. The landmark deal will see unlicensed betting company Stake relegated to sleeve sponsor in order to adhere to new rules surrounding Premier League sponsorship agreements.
As of next season, the Premier League decreed that clubs couldn’t put betting logos on the front of shirts. The fresh collaboration will see CMC appear on the front of men’s, women’s, and Under-21s’ kits over the next few seasons, and it is thought the deal could see the Toffees pocket as much as £25 million a year from it.
The deal with CMC as their new principal sponsor is believed to be a significant uplift, and it is 30% bigger than Stake. For those unfamiliar with CMC, they are a FTSE250 company, operating as a global multi-asset financial services firm.
Run by former Conservative Party treasurer Lord Cruddas, CMC was established in 1989. As part of the sponsorship deal with Everton, CMC will feature on the Merseyside outfit’s matchday and digital channels.
The company, which has 12 global offices, will also support community-focused financial literacy programmes to provide opportunities for those living in the Liverpool region. Lord Cruddas himself is a philanthropist, having set up the Peter Cruddas Foundation in 2006, aimed at helping disadvantaged young people.
News of the sponsorship deal saw CMC’s share price leap as much as 25% in early trading yesterday, valuing the company at £1.6 billion. As a result, the company has revealed it expects to post an operating income of £550m for the year to end March 2027, exceeding its previous forecast of £460m to £480m.
Discussing the significance of the deal, Andrew Middleton, Everton’s President of Business Operations, said: “This is an important agreement for the Club and one that will play a key role in our continued commercial growth.
“Partnerships of this scale help us strengthen revenues, build a more sustainable platform for success and support our ambitions on and off the pitch.
“We look forward to working closely with CMC Markets to bring this partnership to life in a way that is meaningful for supporters and to creating moments that reflect the ambition of both organisations.”
While gambling giant Entain waded into the furore in February surrounding the prohibition of Premier League clubs collaborating with unlicensed betting companies in any shape or form, Everton’s sponsorship activity has continued unabated.
Besides CMC and Stake, Everton have agreed a series of high-profile sponsorships over the past 18 months, including Hill Dickinson as stadium naming rights partner. Other founding partnership agreements have been struck with Budweiser, Pepsi, and Castore.
Off the pitch, Everton have been busy trying to strengthen the side in the summer transfer window. The club have agreed a fee of £16m to bring Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough, and he was believed to be a long-term target of David Moyes. Meanwhile, Everton are trying to negotiate a lower fee with Chelsea in their attempt to land winger Tyrique George on a permanent deal following his loan spell.
In the meantime, Everton fans can get their first look at the new kit for the 26/27 campaign featuring CMC’s branding, which has been unveiled in the Club store. It is also available for purchase online.
