Cody Gakpo is set to come to Anfield as Liverpool have made an agreement to sign the Dutch striker from PSV Eindhoven for between £35 million and £44 million. It will be a record deal for the Eredivisie club and it will aim to bolster Liverpool’s injury-riddled attack.
Gakpo will join Liverpool at the start of the winter transfer period in January and it means that he could be part of Jurgen Klopp’s team away at Brentford on 2 January. The contract will keep the Dutch star at Anfield until 2028.
The forward was one of the Netherland’s stand-out stars of their recent World Cup campaign. He scored three goals against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar as he helped the Dutch team reach the quarter-finals where they were beaten on penalties by Leo Messi’s Argentina.
Gakpo has also been in fine form for PSV Eindhoven this season. Dutch football fans will be familiar with his name popping up on the live scores as has scored nine goals and claimed 12 assists in 14 games for the Eredivisie team.
Liverpool weren’t the only Premier League team who were desperate to sign Gakpo. Manchester United were also in the hunt to sign the 23-year old to bolster their ranks following the controversial exit of Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, Gakpo opted to join Liverpool who will be hoping that he can strengthen the team’s attack that has been decimated by injury. The Merseyside club have had their Premier League ambitions severely dented by long-term injuries to key forwards Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz who both look to be spending significant time away from the action.
While the Liverpool stalwart Mo Salah looks to be in fine form once more, new signing Darwin Nunez has yet to completely win over the Anfield faithful. The £64 million signing has proven to be frustratingly inconsistent in front of goal all season, and this is just one of the reasons why most bookmakers in the UK have relatively long odds for Liverpool to claim a Champions League place this season.
As a result, the addition of Gakpo to the team will give Nunez a real cause to raise his game to ensure that he keeps his first-team slot. Both players are aggressive forwards, and it will be interesting to see whether the Dutch star and the Uruguayan striker can play alongside each other. Thankfully there are also some promising young players coming through the ranks with the likes of Stefan Bajcetic getting his name on the scoresheet on Boxing Day
Liverpool are currently languishing in sixth place in the Premier League table and they face tricky games against Brighton and Chelsea after their visit to Brentford. Even the most optimistic Liverpool fans would be hesitant about using any betting deals to back the team to get the Premier League title as they are a full 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal, but the addition of Gakpo certainly won’t do their Champions League aspirations any harm.
