The Community Shield between Manchester City and Liverpool was decided by a 3-1 score where the Reds came out victorious.
The Community Shield was held at the King Power Stadium in Leicester. It was the first English domestic silverware title of the season for Liverpool. One of the best football predictions from many top UK bookmakers; however, it could've gone either way.
Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring for the hosts before Julian Alvarez equalized the visitors through a VAR review. Mohamed Salah then converted a penalty after a handball by City defender Ruben Dias. Darwin Núñez secured the victory for the visitors with a late header.
Núñez got his first competitive goal for Liverpool. On the other side, for City, Julián Álvarez got his first goal.
The game started with a scoreless draw. In the 21st minute, Alexander-Arnold's powerful strike from the box's edge deflected Nathan Aké and went in off the post.
Erling Haaland had his first chance at goal in the 34th minute, but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Adrián. Two minutes later, he had another good chance to score, but he failed to connect properly with Bernardo Silva's cross.
Both teams introduced new players to the game at the end of the first half. For Liverpool, Darwin Núñez, while for City, Julián Álvarez was named as the winner.
After being brought down by Ederson, Núñez thought he had scored a penalty. However, the flag was up for an infringement.
In the 64th minute, Ederson made a great save to keep out a powerful strike from the Uruguayan. It was set up by Jordan Henderson.
City then got on the board in the 76th minute through a goal by Álvarez, who got the ball past the goalkeeper after a shot by Phil Foden was saved. However, the goal was allowed to stand after a review by the video assistant referee.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty after Núñez's header hit Rúben Dias' hand. Salah converted the spot kick.
With seven minutes left in the game, Núñez got on the board for Liverpool with a goal from Andrew Robertson's cross. This was his first competitive goal for the team.
After being denied by the goalkeeper, Haaland had a golden opportunity to pull one back for City. He had an opportunity to put the ball in the net after receiving a pass from Foden, but he failed to connect with the ball.
Liverpool's new signing, Alexander-Arnold, said it was important for the team to start the season on the right foot. He also praised the contributions of young defender Núñez.
"Our season started today, and it was important for us to get off on the right foot," Alexander-Arnold said.
Alexander-Arnold was particularly impressed by the performance of Núñez as he scored a goal and won a penalty. He noted that the young defender has shown that he could score goals.
"He won the penalty, scored a goal and looked very lively. He's been brought in to score goals and he proved he can do that today," he said of Núñez.
"He's a top player, a young player who is willing to learn. He's bonded well with the lads. He came on with a point to prove."
