The Premier League kicks off this Friday evening as Liverpool host Bournemouth at Anfield. Arne Slot has spent plenty of cash to make sure his team can retain their title, while the visitors lost one of their standout players last campaign to Liverpool. Can Bournemouth beat Liverpool for the first time since 2023? Or will Liverpool make it six consecutive victories against the Cherries? Nathan Joyes makes his
Premier League tips.
Liverpool will be hoping to set the tone for their Premier League campaign on Friday night but
their Community Shield defeat showed there’s room for improvement. After a solid pre-season, winning four of their five matches, Slot would have liked nothing more to pick up a title before
the new campaign began.
And despite leading twice, Liverpool were pegged back by Crystal Palace before the FA Cup winners went on to win on penalties. The positives for Slot was the fact two of his new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong were on the scoresheet.
Liverpool only lost one home game last season - and were incredibly strong at Anfield. If they can replicate that form and learn from their Wembley mistakes it’s almost impossible to look past them to not retain their title.
Bournemouth will go to war without Milos Kerkez who has ironically joined Liverpool but they
moved quickly to replace him, bringing in Rennes’ Adrien Truffert. There’s also a new goalkeeper set to feature between the sticks, as the Cherries splashed the cash to sign Chelsea’s Djordje Petrovic for £25m after a successful season with Strasbourg.
Head coach Andoni Iraola has usually got things right since his arrival back in 2023 and fans
have blind trust that the Spaniard can continue to defy the odds. Iraola will be hoping his Brazilian forward Evanilson can improve on his 10 goals last season having joined from Porto, although he’ll have to wait a little longer to see Justin Kluivert on the pitch who remains on the sidelines. Bournemouth’s ambition will be to finish above 9th this season and it is possible but an opening day trip to Anfield couldn’t be much tougher.
Liverpool enjoy playing Bournemouth. They have won their last five meetings including 2-0 and 3-0 last campaign. In fact, you need to go back to 2023 the last time Bournemouth beat Liverpool but that came in their own back yard.
Liverpool have won the last six meetings at Anfield - which included that historic 9-0 win back in
2022. It may not be quite that one sided this time round, but Bournemouth are up against it.
The hosts are a short price to pick up the three points in round one but it’s not surprising after
their recruitment. It should be an easy win for Liverpool but what’s the betting angle?
Not only have Liverpool won their last six meetings against Bournemouth at home, but Slot’s side have scored at least two goals in all of those matches. Four of those produced at least three goals and one of those well, nine. The sheer quality Liverpool have brought in that can operate in the final third is quite frankly terrifying. And although Crystal Palace showed there’s holes to Liverpool’s game - they are a different beast at Anfield.
Liverpool scored for fun during pre-season, a theme we saw in the Premier League at home last
campaign, scoring 42 goals in front of their supporters. Only Man City (43) scored more. And Bournemouth head into this season without defenders Dean Huijsen who’s joined Real Madrid and Milos Kerkez who’s now with Liverpool. That is two hugely influential players in the heart of the defence and this is where the hosts can once again score plenty against the Cherries.
Hugo Ekitike only needed four minutes to score against Palace, and likely to lead the line again,
the Frenchman could be the one to exploit Bournemouth’s defence. Combined with Liverpool to win and for Ekitike to score anytime -
