We are now less than a week away from The 2024 Masters, which will take place in Augusta this year, and I have some early betting suggestions for you. First off, I’ve found two longshot players who are definitely overpriced at the moment. I’m sure they will both go off at shorter odds next week, it’s worth backing them sooner rather than later.
I also have two predictions for the First Round Leader market and we could end up in profit on day one if we play it right. My advice is to stick to small stakes here, as you’ll want to keep a good bit back for my final selections, which we’ll play on the overall market.
On that note, my full 2024 Masters preview, complete with a selection of betting tips, will be live here on Monday 8 April, so don’t forget to come back for that.
For my longshot betting tips, I have used the prices on offer at Bet Victor. This top-notch bookie also has a great free bet deal up for grabs too.
Bet £5, and you’ll get £30 in free bets. Spot on timing for next week's Masters tips.
For this year's Masters I have two standout longshots at massive prices. They are both seriously good ball strikers with experience on the course, which is absolutely vital at Augusta. There is a lot of class in the field this year, but out of all the players at triple figure odds, these two stood out from the crowd and should definitely outplay their odds next week.
My first longshot for the 2024 Masters is Harris English. He’s currently priced at 175/1, but I think he will be half that price by the beginning of next week. He has some really good form and does particularly well at the tougher courses, so I think he is a player that suits Augusta better than most. He’s also a very good ball striker and can move the ball both ways off the tee which is a big help here too.
His best finish in the event was in 2021 when he finished in tied for 21st and I think he has come a long way since then. He was tied 43rd in this last year but wasn’t playing his best golf at the time. With experience under his belt and better form coming into the Masters this year, I would see him as a live outside contender who is definitely overpriced.
My second longshot is J.T. Poston, another really impressive ball striker. He had eight Top 12 finishes on the PGA Tour last year and he has already had three Top 10s this season, so he’s obviously more than comfortable on the big stage. I have been very impressed by his steady rise up through the world rankings. He now sits in 44th and looks like he is going to continue improving.
He has won twice on the PGA Tour previously and just like Harris English he seems to thrive at the more difficult courses. The 175/1 available for J.T. Poston is a discredit to his ability and I think he could have a big week in the first Major of the year.
He has very good distance control with his Irons, which is absolutely vital around Augusta, so he could be going under the radar this week.
At the time of writing, there are no prices up for the First Round Leaders market, but as there are already some players that stand out to me, it makes sense to tell you about them now. The angle I have taken for my first round leader predictions is firstly to find players with previous form at the course. They are also players that I won't be backing in the outright markets. That’s because it’s very rare to have a winner that was also leading after the first round. So, I want a classy player who is going to be quick out of the gates, based on previous form.
First on my list is Shane Lowry, who has proven form at Augusta and he has one of the best short games out there. I would imagine he is going to play quite well again this week and he has some very consistent form behind him too. He is an Open Champion and has also achieved Top five finishes in all three of the other Majors. That level of experience will see him high up on the list of many this week, but the main attraction for me is that Shane Lowry started incredibly fast last year, with a score of 68 in the opening round, and I think he could easily do the same thing again this time around.
Next on the list is Tommy Fleetwood, who has yet to win a Major, but that doesn’t mean that he won’t start off well next week. He is one of the best ball strikers on Tour when he is in form and the recent vibes about Fleetwood’s game must have hit home. He has said himself how well he feels he has been playing of late and with the way Augusta sets up, it suits his game very well indeed. Don’t get me wrong, maintaining this over four days is a completely different story, but he will turn up full of confidence and potentially play a blinder in round one.
