This week we have the final Major of the season, as the Royal Troon golf course hosts the 152nd Open Championship. My two best bets of the week are already live, but I also have two longshots for you to consider that could easily be going under the radar at huge prices.
Last week I put up Thorbjorn Olesen @ 175/1 and Jorge Campillo @ 400/1, who finished on 8 under and 10 under respectively - just a couple of shots outside of the money. Both played really solid golf for all four rounds, so we couldn’t ask for too much more and both players have a good chance of building on that in the Open Championship this week. Although neither of them has made my longshots for this week, they are both worth keeping a close eye on in the in win market. This week’s longshots should also give us a good run for our money and both have all of the right attributes to play well at Royal Troon this week.
With a huge 10 places on offer for the Open Championship, Ladbrokes is the perfect bookie pick for this week’s longshots. Not only that, if you don’t have an account there, then you can also grab a great deal.
Bet £5, and you’ll get £20 in free bets. It’s a win-win situation.
My first longshot for this week is world number 181 Richard Mansell, who delivered a superb performance at the Renaissance Club last week in the Scottish Open. He started well with three rounds of 67, 69, and 70, before carding a course record of 61 to finish in a tie for 10th place, securing his spot in this week’s Open Championship.
Although he is yet to grab his first win on the DP World Tour, this is only his second season as a full-time Tour member and he is continuously improving. Richard’s game is particularly well-suited to Royal Troon too.
He hits plenty long off the tee and is a very good ball striker with his irons, which are ideal attributes
for this week. His short game on the DP World Tour has been solid, and he proved last week that he can perform well on difficult links-style courses. He ranks high in average scoring on Par 4s and Par 5s, making him a highly underrated player this week.
My second longshot for the Open Championship is Tom McKibbin who was my main pick for the Scottish Open. McKibbin is at a much bigger price for this event after narrowly missing the cut last week, but he played well overall, carding two scores of 69 and missing out by just one shot. He was particularly impressive in round two, reaching 4 under par at one point, but three unfortunate bogeys on the back nine cost him his weekend place.
McKibbin won the European Open last season and he has been remarkably consistent this year too, with five top 10s in his last eight starts. This clearly shows that he has the class to compete with the best in the world and he is now ranked world number 103. His game from tee to green is superb, and his short game is extremely reliable too. Last week's missed cut won’t bother him at all and he will be fully tuned up for the Open Championship.
