Ginger Joe - My Longshot picks for the 2024 British Masters

Big value for the British Masters this week

If you have already seen my preview and best bets for this week, you will know that I’m putting a lot of emphasis on good ball strikers and iron play in particular. All three of my longshots look like they are up for the test that the Belfry presents. Not only do they hit their irons well, but they all have a very good short game too.

Last week’s longshots started well, then fizzled out in round four, but this week I’m feeling confident we can get a better run for our money.

Jack Davidson @ 225/1

My first longshot for this week is Jack Davidson, who has really impressed me this year. He has taken to the DP World Tour really well and is seemingly getting more and more comfortable on the big stage. He has played some really good golf this year, and although he missed the cut at the Danish Championship last week, he finished the two tournaments before that in great style.

He tied for 13th place in the BMW Championship, with a score of 11 under par. Then went on to finish in a tie for 28th at the Czech Masters with a score of 12 under. Both of those courses correlate well with this week’s event and he has all the right attributes to take on the Brabazon. He is plenty long off the tee, an immaculate ball striker, and seems to be quite sharp around the greens too. I think world number 615 Jack Davidson could surprise a few this week.

Jannik De Bruyn @ 125/1

Next on my longshot list is Jannik De Bruyn who appears to be relishing the test of DP World Tour golf for the most part. He can be a little erratic at times, especially off the tee, but he might just get away with it this week, as his superb iron play should balance things out. His ball striking has improved a good deal and he is pretty consistent. Also in his favour is the fact that he can shape the ball both ways, which again, will help him offset a wayward tee shot.

Scoring around the Belfry isn’t easy, but he has plenty of flair and looks like his game sets up well for this course, especially from the approach shots and in. I did expect to see him at a bigger price, but my guess is that it factors in his potential rather than his form. Either way, Jannik De Bruyn is becoming a rather popular player on Tour, and one who is going places. He could easily feature near the top of the leaderboard this week.

Marcus Armitage @ 175/1

My final longshot pick is Marcus Armitage, who is a seriously talented player on his day. His form is very up and down, but he is a previous winner on the DP World Tour and he has clocked up some really good results at the Belfry in the past. His short game is superb, it's more a case of him finding consistency from tee to green.

His iron play is fairly solid though, so if he does lose a few shots off the tee, he may be able to pull them back elsewhere. That said, there is plenty of room off the tee around the Brabazon, so he is still worth considering. If Marcus Armitage comes in the right frame of mind, and a few things fall his way, he could go well at a course where he has previous good form. It certainly wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if he was able to hit the place money this week.
