It’s time to move on to my longshots for the Irish Open over at Royal County Down. We have been getting really close with these selections just lately, so with a bit of luck, we could find ourselves in the places this week. The two players I have picked are both previous winners on Tour and both have plenty of links golf experience.
What I like most about these two players is their solid iron play, but they are reliable with the shorter clubs too, which is another positive. If they can get off to a good start both are more than capable of outplaying their odds and I am expecting them to do well in this week’s tournament.
Courtesy of Ladbrokes I have a sign up offer with some free bets for you to look at. Bet £5, and you’ll get £20 in free bets. With 10 places available, it’s a great deal.
Dan Brown has some excellent form at links golf courses and should have no problem at Royal County Down. He has all the right attributes to play well on this course - he hits a soft fade, he controls his ball flight well, and he has a really solid short game on his day.
He has struggled a bit in his last three tournaments, but prior to that he finished 10th in the Open Championship. He was leading as they headed into the final round and if he turns up in that sort of form then there is no reason why he shouldn’t get competitive here.
He is a player I would consider for a first round leader punt too, as he has the ability to shoot really low scores when he gets on a roll. In my opinion, this event is wide open and Dan Brown comes here with a lot of potential, making him overpriced at 125/1.
Ross Fisher is a five-time winner on the DP World Tour and a player I have liked for many years. He finished tied for ninth in the BMW International Tournament, then tied 12th in the Czech Masters a week later, so his game is there. The two recent events where he missed the cut were nothing drastic either. He shot fairly solid rounds of golf and didn’t make too many mistakes, he simply didn’t hole enough putts.
Do not underestimate Ross Fisher’s ability on this type of course. He has had years of experience on links golf courses, and his iron play is superb, which is of huge interest to me here. He also has a very repeatable golf swing, which is something else I like. He will need to be careful about his trajectory, due to the high winds that prevail on this course, but generally he has excellent control, and I’m sure he will adjust for that. He is more than capable of shooting low scores, and I can easily see Ross Fisher making the places this week.
