This week the DP World Tour plays host to the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club. I have already shared my two best bets of the week, but I also have two longshots that I think can outplay their odds and are definitely worth a second look.
Last week, I put up Casey Jarvis at a price of 200/1. He was sitting in second place after round one, but from there, things went a little bit downhill. He seemed to struggle under pressure last week, but he is new to the DPWT so he will learn from that experience and is worth keeping a close eye on in the future. David Ravetto was largely disappointing, but hopefully, my two longshots for this week can give us a better run for our money.
Both are previous winners on Tour and both have some really good form on links-style golf courses too. Provided they bring their best game with them this week, I think they are sure to at least outplay their odds.
With two sets of betting tips for this week’s golf, this free bet offer from Bet365 might just come in handy.
Bet £10, and you’ll get £30 in free bets. If you don’t already have an account, then why not give it a try?
My first longshot player is Thorbjorn Olesen, an eight-time DP World Tour winner who deserves a close look. I've mentioned before that you need a classy player to win, or even get competitive in this week’s event, and Olesen definitely fits the bill. He has plenty of class and is a consistent performer on links golf courses, having finished tied for 25th and 30th in this event over the past two seasons. Also, he has previously won the Alfred Dunhill Links, one of the most prestigious links events of the year.
This week’s event will require a strategy of making birdies and minimising mistakes. So
Thorbjorn Olesen’s experience and consistency on this type of course makes him an appealing choice at a massive price. He has shown good form this season and it would be no surprise to me if he was able to compete at the top of the leaderboard this week. Outside the favourites, Olesen is a strong contender for a place finish and could be a solid each way bet this week, with plenty of places available.
My second longshot for this week is world number 123 Jorge Campillo. He is a supremely talented player who won the Magical Kenya Open on the DPWT for us last year, and has since become a regular on the PGA Tour as well. Many players struggle initially when transitioning to the PGA Tour, but Jorge has been fantastic for the most part, proving that he can compete at this level.
Although he missed his last two cuts, Jorge finished tied for fourth in the Myrtle Beach Classic, which was a huge effort and the switch back to a links course shouldn't pose a problem for him. His two best attributes are his ball striking with his irons and his putting - both attributes I really like for this week. If he brings his best game to the Scottish Open this week, he has every chance of being competitive. Like Thorbjorn Olesen, Jorge has all the tools to win here, it's just a matter of whether he shows up in form. At his current price I'm willing to give him a chance anyway.
