It has been a fantastic week of racing at Chester and we are heading into the final day with my third and final Lucky 15. I can’t review Day 2, as I’m writing this prior to the start of Thursday’s racing, but we had a decent start to the week and hopefully we can finish in style. The highlight of Day 3 is the Group 3 Huxley Stakes where we have a really strong lineup of contenders, but It’s a very good card from start to finish and I have selected my four best bets for you. These selections look really good each way value to me and I’m sure we can get a few of them into the places, which will give us a bit of profit ready for the weekend.
For the final day of the Chester meeting Bet365 have an offer that you won't want to miss out on. Just bet £10, and you’ll get £30 in free bets in time for the weekend.
I’m starting in the opening race, which is a very competitive renewal of the Grosvenor Handicap. We should have good ground for this race and I have a strong fancy with some solid course form, but there are plenty here with the potential to make this a hot race. Liamarty Dreams, running for Karl Burke, has obvious claims after winning his last two, plus he has won over course and distance previously, and I like horses with experience round here. He sets a high standard, but will need to continue his upward curve in such a competitive race.
However, the one I really fancy here is Boardman, from the Tim Easterby camp and he is a horse I have followed for years. He is an eight-year-old now and he is hardly getting any younger, but he has optimum conditions here and won over course and distance last season off a 3lb higher mark. When he gets his ground he is very effective indeed and looks to be primed for a big run following on from an encouraging return to action on ground that he didn’t enjoy. At his double-figure price Boardman is a cracking each way bet.
The 10 furlong Friday Handicap is all set to be a cracker and there is a horse in the lineup that I think is ready to strike. On Handicap marks, Botanical and Bolster represent strong chances for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, with both highly likely to go close. But I think City Streak is primed and ready to put on a huge performance.
He acts on all surfaces and made his seasonal debut on heavy ground at Bath last month. Watching that race back has me convinced that switching to firm ground will bring out even more from him.
He has evidently been targeted at this race as a previous course and distance winner
and I think he will stay on very strongly at the finish.
The Huxley Stakes is a fantastic race every year and this renewal looks no different. Regal Reality is a nine-year-old now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ran another big race here. My concern is that he hasn’t raced at Chester before, but I think he will stay on well late in the race and wouldn’t be the worst each way bet. Israr has been a tricky type and isn’t the most reliable either, but on a going day, he could well put on a decent performance.
I think that Passenger is the most likely winner and the main danger to my selection. Nonetheless, I’m taking a chance on Royal Rhyme who has an official rating of 113. He has mainly raced on soft or heavy, and ran very well, but as a son of Lope De Vega he may be even better on a faster surface. I’m sure we will see something really special from him on his first start as a four-year-old.
The final leg of my Lucky 15 comes in the Chester Cup and it looks like we might be about to see another Emmet Mullins gamble pay off. At the time of writing The Shunter is priced at 10/1 for this race, but he is likely to be primed to the max and he is a very eye-catching entry.
The one I like though is Emiyn who is the only course and distance winner in the field, and even though the fast ground may not be totally ideal for him, he always goes well at Chester and can stay all day long. He is more than entitled to pick up another Handicap and this could well be the time to take his side.
