There’s a lot happening on Saturday, with the 2000 Guineas and the final day of the Punchestown Festival, but there is also some brilliant action elsewhere so I have put together a cross card each way Lucky 15. I’ve gone for value for this one, so my picks are all horses that I think are overpriced and if we manage to get them in the places, then we will take that as a result. So that’s four betting tips, from four different racetracks and hopefully we can see some profit on a superb Saturday of racing before we head off to the 1000 Guineas on Sunday.
Get ready for the weekend with this fantastic offer from Ladbrokes.
Bet £5, and you’ll get £20 in free bets. Spot on timing for my cross-card Lucky 15.
My first Lucky 15 pick comes in this 16 runner Handicap, which looks deeply competitive on paper. Summerghand is the current 9/2 favourite and even at the age of 10 he still looks like there is plenty of running left in him, but I do have concerns about using hold up tactics for him in this race. So, I think the bet here is Mums Tipple who looks primed for a big run here after a short break and is better handicapped than the majority in this field. Last time out at Kempton he ran over 7 furlongs, but he is a very strong traveller, and the drop in trip to 6 furlongs on the turf looks perfect for him. He ticks a lot of boxes on this occasion.
We have a fascinating line up in this fillies’ mile and there are plenty in with chances. The top four in the betting are very closely matched though and I think it could be worth taking them on. The one I fancy in this race is Andrew Balding's
Marcella
who becomes very interesting indeed on this heavy ground. She has only run four times in her career, with her best performance coming at Chester over seven furlongs. However, her last start over a mile was very encouraging, she moved very nicely through the race and just got going a little too late.
I think the further Marcella goes, the better she gets and on this heavy ground her stamina will shine out. I believe she is underestimated here.
The Hunt Cup Handicap at Thirsk is a brilliant race and last year's winner, Northern Express, heads the betting. He has an obvious chance, but the extra 9lb he is carrying now will make it a much tougher task. He is a progressive sort and has been very consistent, so he’s almost sure to be in the mix again. However, I’m siding with last year’s runner up, Pisanello, who represents David O’Meara. His form is a bit in and out, but he won't mind the conditions here and his record fresh makes him very appealing. He is 5lb better off with the favourite and his mark of 86 makes him a live contender. I think Pisanello can go one better than he did last year.
My final Lucky 15 selection comes in the Four Year Old Hurdle. This is going to be a good race to watch and there are some classy horses in the lineup. Willie Mullins brings Storm Heart, who is a lovely horse, but I think we will see him at his best over fences next season. That said, he won't mind the ground and could go well. Then we have Kargese, the current favourite, and to be honest she is going to take the world of beating. I am a huge fan and I think she is going to be very good when she goes Chasing next year. But here, I’m looking for value, and I think I’ve found that with Bunting. This race could set up nicely for him if he can tidy up his jumping a bit and he only has about four lengths to find with Kargese. He has bolted up twice on deep ground, so rain would be welcomed and he will certainly prefer Punchestown over Cheltenham. I’m expecting a big performance from him here and he could well spring a surprise.
