Newcastle welcome Liverpool to St James Park this Sunday evening in what looks set to be a really good game. Both teams have started the season with intent and even though we are only on game day 3, these big game points can become very important as the season goes on and both will fancy their chances of taking all three.

Newcastle started the season with a really good 5-1 victory over Aston Villa and then played well in a 1-0 defeat to Man City and look like they are going to continue the good form from last season into this year’s too. Liverpool have also started the season well with a 1-1 draw away to Chelsea which was a fair result but improved to beat Bournemouth 3-1 at Anfield last time out and I think Liverpool will continue to grow as the season goes on. Both teams have some new additions to the squad and it will be interesting to see how this game pans out.
If you were basing your predictions on previous meetings between the two team’s then you would have Liverpool down as the clear favourites. Liverpool are undefeated in their last 13 premier league games against Newcastle having won 9, and drawn the other 3, but this season is surely going to be much closer with Newcastle being a much improved team this past 12 months. So much so that Newcastle have been installed as even money favourites to win the fixture.
This week's clash between Newcastle and Liverpool is likely to divide opinions but I have quite a strong view on the game myself. Newcastle’s rapid improvement seems to have the majority of punters having them as the current favourites, and I do understand this. Eddie Howe has done wonders with their squad and proved his earlier promise that he showed with Bournemouth and since he has been in charge of better players, it’s fair to say he is getting some very good results but Liverpool are going to be no pushovers. They may have a slightly changed squad themselves but they are warming into the season game by game and I think they will be really hard to beat.
New signing from Leipzig Szoboszlai has started seriously well and I think Liverpool have a special talent in him and this does somewhat ease the blow of having lost a few of their midfield and you have to be excited by his presence in the squad. Up front Liverpool seem dangerous as ever and I think even though Newcastle will be coming in to this full of confidence, Liverpool are the ones to beat and the 2/1 is a very big price in my opinion.
So for my first betting tip of the fixture, Liverpool to win at 2/1 is plenty of value. I do however think that Newcastle will get on the score sheet, so Liverpool to win and both teams to score is currently 7/2 and again that is a very good price to get stuck into.
My final prediction of the game is that Liverpool will win 3-1 come the end of 90 minutes and the 20/1 on offer there is just obscene. I think there has been a slight overreaction to Newcastle in the market here and I believe Liverpool are the team to side with.
