Russell Martin’s Southampton make the long trek up to the north-east for the opening game of the season on Saturday at Eddie Howe’s Newcastle. There really could have been easier starts for the Saints on their return to the Prem.
Last year’s Championship play-off winners have been given the assignment of going to play the Magpies at St James’ where they were they recorded the 4th best home numbers in the league last year. There were 12 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses with 49 goals scored and 22 against. Their haul of 40pts from their 19 games was bettered only by Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal.
The main goals threat for Newcastle is clearly Alexander Isak but he’s odds on to score a goal and less than 3/1 in places to score first. I feel that the creativity of winger Anthony Gordon, where particularly at home he was extremely impressive last campaign, is where the value lies.
He will look to continue this streak this Saturday against a team that shipped 63 goals in the Championship last year. That was more than even 18th-placed QPR who flirted with relegation for most of the season.
Gordon has really taken to life with the Toon Army since his move last summer and is the kind of player who is exciting to watch and gets the supporters off their seats. The lively winger was involved in 21 of Newcastle’s 85 goals scored last season.
This accounted for just under 25% of their total goals either scoring or assisting and is a key component to the way Howe’s team like to play the game and their attacking style of football.
It is at St. James’ Park where the England international is at his best though. In 18 PL home appearances for Newcastle last campaign, Gordon bagged an impressive 9 goals and 7 assists in front of the Geordie faithful. With the passionate and vociferous fans cheering him on, Gordon was involved in 16 of Newcastle’s 49 goals on home soil last term as Howe’s men achieved the feat of scoring in every single home game.
I see no signs of this form letting up when newly-promoted Southampton visit, as Gordon looks to add to his goal in his only pre-season appearance last week against Spanish side Girona. According to several reports, the Saints are sticking with their philosophy of playing out from the back.
I feel Newcastle’s energetic, high-intensity press will cause Martin’s men some issues and the likes of Gordon could certainly take advantage of this. Gordon is 13/10 with Betfred to score anytime in this one and I make that a value bet and fancy him to hit the ground running for the 24/25 campaign here.
