Ollie Robinson to return for Test series vs South Africa

Ollie Robinson has been called to return to England squad to play in a three-match Test series against South Africa starting on August 17.

England recently recovered from a series of winless white-ball cricket campaigns before finally defeating New Zealand and forcing India to a draw.

England & Wales Cricket Board performance director Mohammad Bobat said having Robinson back on the team would make a good improvement for England.

“After an excellent start to the summer under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, we’re looking forward to an exciting Test series against a strong South Africa side,” Bobat said.

"It’s good to get Ollie Robinson back in the mix after his recent injury. He will continue his progress by playing for the Lions against South Africa in a four-day match at Canterbury next week."

Robinson said he hoped playing in the match against South Africa would help him prepare to play against them again later at Lord's.

“I’m hoping to play in a Lions game early next month after which the South Africa series comes up pretty quickly, so I’m hoping that with a couple of good games I can be back in the mix,” Robinson said.

The series will be a good opportunity for Dean Elgar-led South Africa to reinforce their top spot in the World Test Championships standings, with 71.43 percentage points.

Robinson had been absent for almost two months due to a back injury and COVID-19. He missed the 5th Test against India and returned to the field for Sussex in the County Championship last week, where he took nine wickets in a match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

The 28-year-old Robinson will replace Jamie Overton for the matches against South Africa at Lord’s on August 17-21 and Emirates Old Trafford on August 25-29. Overton is currently out due to hand and foot injuries. Robinson will first play in a four-day match against South Africa at Canterbury on August 9.

Robinson's previous season

In the 2021 season, Robinson established himself as a notable player in the Test format. He ended the summer as the country’s leading fast bowler. It was also the year he was awarded a new ECB central contract.

It was also the season where his career almost ended because some offensive social media posts he made when he was a teenager resurfaced. It happened when he was making his Test debut against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 2 last year.

Despite the incident, Robinson claimed seven wickets for the match and scored 42 in his maiden innings. However, he was banned for eight matches and fined £3200. He eventually apologised and was allowed to return to cricket.

After his stint in Second XI Championship for Hampshire and Essex, Robinson signed for Sussex on a short-term deal. In April 2015, around 10 months after leaving Yorkshire, Robinson claimed his maiden first-class century while on debut. He put on 164 runs for the final wicket against Durham at Chester-Le-Street and surpassed a 107-year record for the best tenth-wicket partnership for Sussex.
