Welcome back golfing fans. It’s time for my weekly golf tips and in this week’s article I’ll be taking a look at both the PGA Tour & DP World Tour. As is usually the case, I will advise each way singles and cross-doubles.
On the PGA Tour this week we have the John Deere Classic and on the DP World Tour we have the Made in Himmerland tournament in Denmark. The John Deere classic is likely to be a very low scorer again, so the squad I have put up for this week have a combination of decent attributes. For my DP World Tour squad, I have gone in search of good iron play and putting, as this is a very scorable course if players find the flat spots on the greens.
I have gone for four selections in each of these two events and think that four needs to be the limit going forward. I feel as though putting five up makes the betting a bit heavy-duty and four per team still gives us plenty of great chances anyway.
The three players who missed out on spots this week are all really good ball strikers, Ewen Ferguson, Richard Mansell and Jordan Smith. I think they will all be winning in the near future, so do keep an eye on those three for yourselves.
For this week’s golf selections I have an offer from Bet Victor you might want to consider. All you have to do is bet just £5 and you’ll get £30 in free bets, which is a fantastic deal.
My first selection for the DP World Tour is Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal, who won for us in the KLM Open, which brought him up to a grand total of nine DP World Tour titles and I think he has a great chance of winning for us again here.
The track here is not too dissimilar to the KLM course, so I think it will suit his game much better than many others. It’s quite an open course, provided you're straight enough off the tee and Pablo fits that category very nicely indeed. That, combined with his superb iron play, has to put him on the radar of a lot of tipsters this week.
Pablo will most certainly be looking for his third DP World Tour title of the year. With the Ryder Cup less than 12 weeks away, a win here would almost certainly secure a Ryder Cup spot for him. He is playing superb golf from tee to green this season and his putting has always been rock solid, making Pablo Larrazabal an easy first selection for me.
My second selection for this week is world number 187, Gavin Green, who has come right back into form of late. This test could be just what he needs to get him into the winner’s enclosure on the DP World Tour for the very first time. He has been in contention plenty and in his last five events, he has really shown us what he’s made of.
When he gets on a roll, he can be a threat to the whole field and this sort of track is absolutely ideal for his style of game play. He’s been racking up some decent scores of late, which have seen him finishing 12th in the BMW, eighth in last week’s British Master’s and, like Pablo Larrazabal, he also played really well in the KLM Open.
His ball striking is absolutely superb, he is number 1 on Tour for the lowest number of putts per round, and also the lowest number of putts for greens hit in regulation. If he turns up in the same form as he has the last few weeks, then Gavin Green has to be in with a great chance. His win could be just round the corner and was close to being my number one pick of the week.
My third selection for the Made In Himmerland, is world number 205, Marcel Schneider. For me, he is the standout, in terms of being the player best-suited to this week's track from tee to green, despite the fact that he is still a maiden on Tour.
The German players are having a really good season and Marcel himself has been knocking on the door of late. He had a really good finish in Singapore, where he finished in a tie for third, and he has been pretty consistent since without setting the world alight.
He has a really neutral ball flight off the tee and the same goes for his irons and wedges, qualities I think are essential at this open sort of course. This could be a good chance for Marcel Schneider to make his move up the world rankings and I think he’s a great shout for this week’s event.
Selection number four, Marcel Siem, is one of my regulars and I really feel he has no excuses this week whatsoever. He is a five-time winner on the DP World Tour and even though he has his moments, he is definitely an improved player this year. This is a course where finding the flat spots will be very helpful, but if you're not finding the flat spots, you need to have a solid putter and Marcel Siem is that guy for sure.
I’ve mentioned previously, that when Marcel gets on a roll, he is hard to stop. He has been known to win from five or six shots back going into the final day of any tournament and that is a great player attribute to have on side. He is also sneaky long off the tee and is fourth in the putting stats. Alongside Gavin Green, Marcel is unreal with the putter and this course is built for his game.
Selection number one for the John Deere Classic is Eric Cole, who is well overdue a win on the PGA Tour and I think this could be his week. He often gets himself into contention in the big events and usually at a much bigger price too, but it seems the bookies are now aware of his talents and they are taking no chances. Rightly so in my opinion too - he plays well at the courses where you can get on the birdie train, but he plays very well at the difficult courses too.
Last season he missed a fair number of cuts, but this year he seems much more at home on Tour and he easily made the cut for both of the Majors he has played in this year, starting both off with a solid round in the 60’s. He then played in the Travellers’ a couple of weeks ago and shot rounds of 64, 65, 73 and 65. He would have been bang in the mix if it wasn’t for the quadruple bogey eight late on in his third round. His experience is starting to help him remain more consistent at the top of the leaderboard and a week off last week should see him come here fresh and in form.
One man who deserves to finally get a win on the PGA Tour is Taylor Montgomery. He is a seriously good player on this type of course and even though he hasn’t been in the best form of late, he should enjoy this track much more. He has taken a few weeks off since the US Open to freshen himself up and I think that doing so was a very wise decision on his part. The US Open looked gruelling, but after a break, he will be coming here feeling good and ready to take on all comers.
You need a good putter on your side this week and Taylor Montgomery is top of the putting stats this year. He not only has the best record from outside of 25ft, but also has the lowest putting stroke average on Tour. This course is right up his street and I think Taylor Montgomery could be in for a big week on Tour.
My third selection of the week is going to be Australian Aaron Baddeley, who is a four-time winner on the PGA Tour and could be an interesting contender for this week. His approach play has been superb this season and his short game seems to have improved a lot too. On the basis of those credentials alone, he shouldn’t be a 125/1 shot, he is more than capable of making an impact in this event.
The field is rather open this week and I think that gives big opportunities to the more experienced players on tour and Aaron Baddeley has a really controlled ball flight for this event. He caught my eye early on during the selection process for this event and he most definitely gets into this week’s squad.
Although Mark Hubbard has been a bit hit and miss for some of this year, his latest efforts have been much-improved and he always goes well in these low scoring events. He has yet to win on Tour, but he has finished runner-up, as well putting in some other really good performances along the way.
For me, his most impressive efforts came in the two RBC events, the Heritage and the Canadian, where he played consistently well throughout and I can see a similar performance coming this week too. While the first three players in the squad have particular attributes, Mark Hubbard strengthens the whole line up with his all-round game.
So there you have it, another week’s worth of selections to take a look at for the PGA & DP World Tours. Hopefully we can get ourselves back into the winner’s enclosure after a couple of near misses last week. Good luck with your bets and don’t forget to check out the great bookie deals here at Betting.co.uk if you fancy boosting your bankroll.
