Porsche European Open – Date Changes

The European Tour announced on Wednesday 27th June that there would be a slight delay to the 2021 Porsche European Open. The reason behind the delay is to account for the German government’s current travel restrictions, with the UK currently being on the country’s red list due to concerns about the spreading of the “Indian variant” of Covid-19 in certain parts of England and Scotland.

The tournament was initially scheduled to be held from June 3rd – June 6th at the Green Eagle Golf Courses in Hamburg. These original dates have now been pushed back two days to allow the UK players, caddies, organisers and broadcasters to travel without strict quarantine regulations. The tournament will now take place from June 5th – June 7th, with the venue remaining in Hamburg.

Reduction to the Usual Format

In addition to the 48 hour pushback on dates, there as also been an amendment to the format of the tournament. The Porsche European Open 2021 will now be a 54 hole event to accommodate for the time lost by the last minute date change.

Without the last minute date change and format reduction, the impact on the tournament could have been significant. Around a third of the 156 players either live or have recently been to the UK, as well as a significant number of caddies, organisers and broadcast/media crew. As the current rules state, anyone who has been in the UK within the last ten days would have to a mandatory quarantine upon arrival in germany with no exceptions. Thanks to the 48 hour delay, the current red list restrictions will now have been lifted in enough time for those who would have been affected to travel.
