One intriguing by-product of having the World Cup in December is the fact that it makes the winter transfer period a lot more interesting. So forget about that penalty miss for one moment and concentrate on which World Cup stars could be coming to the Premier League.
Man United have a real knack of signing mystifyingly overrated football players. It looks like that pattern is set to continue as the Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie De Jong, has said that he would be happy to come to Old Trafford. Following his largely unmemorable performance for the Netherlands at the World Cup, it’s hard to see how he could get troubled United back to their best.
This Moroccan defensive midfielder was one of the stand-out stars of the World Cup and it was hugely enjoyable to watch Amrabat clattering into forwards of supposedly ‘better’ teams like Portugal, Belgium, and Spain. At the moment it looks like the 26-year-old wants to join Liverpool ahead of interest from Tottenham. Shame, because it would have been fun to see what fireworks Amrabat and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg could have produced.
Ecuador were another team who did surprisingly well at the World Cup and much of this was down to the talents of their young midfielder, Moises Caicedo. Most of the best bookmakers for betting on sports would have the 21-year-old heading to Liverpool, although it looks like the increasingly attractive Brighton could tempt the young star.
Apart from the godlike Kylian Mbappe, Marcus Thuram is part of the new wave of French players who are expected to set the transfer market alight this winter. Once again, Man United are among the main contenders to get the 20-year-old. It’d be interesting to see how he could slot in alongside Jadon Sancho in the new-look Ronaldo-less United attack. Here’s hoping he doesn’t turn out to be another Anthony Martial.
Gakpo was one of the stand-out stars from a largely forgettable Netherlands at the World Cup. Interestingly, his boss at PSV Eindhoven, Ruud van Nistelrooy, has said that he would be powerless to stop the 23-year old leaving the Dutch club this winter transfer season. As a result, it’s little wonder that both Man United and Arsenal have come sniffing around the winger. Whether he’s really worth that £80 million price tag is another question.
You know it’s silly season when people start speculating that Cristiano Ronaldo is set to join Arsenal. However, that’s the latest gossip coming out of the rumour pipe. However, more sane expectations are that Ronaldo will go chasing the money somewhere that doesn’t mind his monstrously inflated sense of self-worth.
Finally, what’s better than even the best betting offers in the UK? That’s right, Jude Bellingham. Following his insanely good form for England, Liverpool are expecting to be firming up their bid for the prodigious 19-year-old this winter.
