All 380 games have now been released for the upcoming season. It’s safe to say, there are plenty of exciting matchups – some of which take place on matchday 1 of the new season!
Yes, Euro 2020 has only just started, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited for the return of the Premier League! Yesterday, the Premier League fixtures for the 2021/22 season were announced, with Matchday 1 as always a major talking point.
Premier League champions Manchester City kick off their title defence with a trip to London to play Spurs. There’s also still the transfer rumour of Harry Kane wearing a sky blue shirt next season, and if this does happen, it will certainly be a very interesting encounter.
The old rivalry of Manchester United and Leeds United will continue on Matchday 1, with the Yorkshire side travelling across the Pennines to play in what should be a fierce battle.
The three newly-promoted sides have a tough introduction into the top flight, in particular Norwich, who host Liverpool in their first Premier League game. Meanwhile, Watford will play Aston Villa, whilst Championship play-off winners Brentford host Arsenal.
The Premier League 2021/22 season officially kicks off on Saturday 14th August. However, in recent years, one game has been selected to play Friday night – usually the Premier League champions. So, we anticipate the first match of the Premier League on Friday 13th August.
Due to broadcasting rights, the fixtures that have just been released are subject to change – so the answer is no, each and every game won’t be at 15:00 GMT on a Saturday afternoon. For August’s fixtures, scheduling changes will be announced by Monday 21 June.
Meanwhile, the last day of the season is Sunday 22 May – this time with every game played at the same time, kicking off at 4pm GMT. There are also some interesting matchups in that one, but that will depend on how the league table is shaped by the start of May.
