The second of two Super Sunday clashes sees Bournemouth travel north to face Manchester City. Our betting tipster Matthew O'Regan has his betting tips and predictions.
After back-to-back Premier League defeats in August, the general consensus was that Manchester City looked set to struggle this term, much like they did last season when Liverpool cantered away with the title. However, following an excellent run of form, City’s title aspirations appeared to be back on track—until a 1-0 defeat away to Aston Villa halted their momentum last weekend.
City have since returned to winning ways, beating Swansea City 3-1 in South Wales on Wednesday evening in the Carabao Cup. Pep Guardiola will now be hoping his side can carry that success back into the league on Sunday. As expected, most of City’s goals have come from Erling Haaland. The Norwegian goal machine has been electrifying so far this season, scoring 24 times already for club and country, including a five-goal haul against Moldova during the September international break. Unsurprisingly, he leads the race for this season’s Premier League Golden Boot with 11 goals in just nine games.
The summer additions of Teijani Reijnders and Gianluigi Donnarumma are also proving to be inspired signings, with both players settling into life at the Etihad seamlessly. Reijnders, in particular, has been impressive in midfield, showcasing his creativity and vision as a tricky playmaker for opposition defences. Guardiola will make a late call on Rodri’s fitness, and there are some rumours surrounding Haaland’s condition after he missed the game against Swansea. Nonetheless, it is expected that the Norwegian striker will start at the Etihad on Sunday.
After a mass exodus of their defence in the summer, few expected Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth side to be sitting second in the table, just below Arsenal, at this stage of the season. The departures of Milo Kerkez, Dean Hujisen, Ilyan Zabarnyi, and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga left significant gaps in the Cherries’ backline. However, the arrivals of Adrien Truffert, Bafode Diakite, Veljko Milosavljevic, Djordje Petrovic, and last season’s third-choice centre-back Marcos Sendai have solidified the defence, allowing Bournemouth to go from strength to strength.
That defensive stability, combined with Antoine Semenyo’s continued form from last campaign and the recent goal-scoring exploits of summer signing Eli Junior Kroupi, has made Iraola’s side a genuine contender to maintain their strong start. Kroupi has scored four goals in his last three games, stepping up impressively in the absence of Evanilson, who is sidelined with a calf strain. Bournemouth’s youthful and energetic squad has been thrilling to watch, but they now face a stern test at the Etihad. Their solid defence will be put to the ultimate test against the attacking firepower of Haaland, Foden, and Doku. Evanilson remains out with the aforementioned calf issue.
Manchester City enter this fixture as strong favourites, and the head-to-head record supports that outlook. Bournemouth have beaten City only once in their history—a 2-1 victory at the Vitality Stadium last season. City have won all but three of their 24 meetings, drawing just one of those at the Etihad. It’s undoubtedly a daunting task for Iraola’s men, but if there were ever a time to challenge that record, Bournemouth’s current form might give them the best chance yet.
Bournemouth will be looking to continue their strong start to the season and may fancy their chances of hurting the hosts in transition. Matthew O'Regan has looked at the Premier League betting odds and provided his best bet.
Antoine Semenyo has been the stand out player for Bournemouth this season, with the Ghanaian scoring six goals and registering three assists in nine starts. The 25-year-old has had a shot on target in all bar one game, while making two fouls in 7/9.
