The final week of the Racing League takes place today at Southwell, with all seven races featuring live on ITV Racing. While the concept of the Racing League is yet to win over every racing fan, the contests can provide competitive betting heats and interesting angles to exploit.
Below, I have three Racing League Week 6 Betting Tips to consider on a night that could see Matt Chapman’s London & The South win their first title. Champagne at the ready.
Only one race on Southwell’s Racing League card this evening has fewer than 12 runners, which means there are each-way plays to find throughout the best horse racing bookmakers. If you are looking for a few big-priced horses to chance each-way, BetMGM are offering four places on six of the seven races, which is very handy. Furthermore, they have a great betting sign-up offer for new customers. If you bet £10, you’ll get £40 in free bets, which looks like a great deal.
18:15 Southwell – Kosometsuke @ 11/2 with Betfred – 1pt each-way
20:15 Southwell – Fantasy Believer @ 9/2 with BetMGM – 1pt Win
20:45 Southwell – Existent @ 14/1 with Betfred – 0.5pt each-way
In the second race of the evening, Kosometsuke could still have improvement to show for Roger Varian and The East. Since he started handicapping in May, the three-year-old by Kodiac has improved 12 pounds from a mark of 65 to 77, thanks to one win and three seconds. For connections, he has probably been a bit unlucky to go so far up the handicap over his last three runs considering he has failed to get his head in front.
But still, he showed plenty of promise in all of these starts, and his one win did come on the all-weather at Kempton. Furthermore, three of these four handicap runs occurred in three-year-old only handicaps, but today’s assignment is against his elders, and because of this, he gets a handy six-pound weight allowance, which effectively brings him back down to a mark of 71.
Five horses that he finished ahead of at Kempton, Salisbury, and Sandown have all won since, so his form looks very respectable, and Roger Varian’s 16% strike rate is pretty reasonable.
I believe that it’s always worth giving a second look at Saffie Osborne’s rides in the Racing League for obvious reasons. She was the top jockey last year, and she seems to ride the most winners for Wales & The West. She has five rides at Southwell on Thursday, but her best chance looks to be on board Fantasy Believer in the penultimate contest.
The eight-year-old Make Believe gelding won this race last year at 14/1 under Osborne, and his success was pretty snug. That was the last time he tasted victory, but since then, he’s finished third in a Listed race at Kempton, third over this course and distance, and an eye-catching third in a Racing League handicap at Chepstow.
That’s a pretty decent record, and he arrives here off a mark of 90, which is just three pounds higher than last season’s winning rating. The form of his third in the Listed Wild Flower Stakes at Kempton in December also looks pretty respectable, as the second, Eydon, won the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes two starts later. He is getting on, but he has also been well-backed in the market, and he seems to love the all-weather.
He may be seven, but there is still a big race left in Stuart Williams’ Existent, and a return to five furlongs this evening should help him get his head in front. Interestingly, he’s only won three of his 55 starts, which is a small worry, but he has also finished second nine times and third on nine more occasions. Two of his three wins have occurred on the all-weather, also.
The Kingman gelding is down to a mark of 80, which is still 14 pounds below his last winning mark, and it’s five pounds below the mark he had when he was an eye-catching fifth in the Epsom Dash earlier this season. That race was won by the subsequent Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes victor Jm Jungle, and both the second, Spartan Arrow, and Vintage Clarets, the fifth, have won races subsequently.
Rose Dawes was his jockey on Derby Day, and she returns to the saddle to claim a very valuable five pounds off his back. Furthermore, he went off favourite for a Racing League handicap two starts ago, and he was well-backed for the six-furlong Fitzdares Sprint Series Final Handicap at Windsor last time out, so someone must think he is ready to win. Hopefully, he is, and he can get his head in front tonight.
