Reece Topley leads England to 100 run win over India in 2nd ODI

England defeated India by 100-run in the second match of their ODI series. Reece Topley went 6-24 to record the best figures any England bowler has ever produced in an ODI.

India thrashed England at the Oval, but England made a comeback at Lord's, recording a total of 246 after falling to 102-5. Leading India was Yuzvendra Chahal, who picked up 4-47 and took three early wickets in Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes.

Moeen Ali joined forces with Liam Livingstone to make 46. He then recorded 62 with David Willey. Topley started with two maidens before removing India skipper Rohit Sharma for a duck. India then began losing regular wickets, with none of their batters passing 30.

Topley concluded the match with two wickets in his last over. The match saw his maiden five-wicket haul as an England player. He also became the first in an England shirt to take five wickets in an ODI at Lord's in 25 years. Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised him for the feat.

"It's an outstanding story, the way he's gone through the ups and downs, the stress fractures," Hussain told Sky Sports. "He's bowled well in white-ball cricket of late and as well in that T20 game at Trent Bridge when everyone else was going around the park.

"It's his place now, and when you get figures like that, with so many big games coming up and England are looking for bowlers with a long list of injuries...if some bowler can stand up and continue to put in performance after performance then you're almost saying 'you can't leave me out'."

Jason Roy continues to struggle

Jason Roy has so far recorded an ODI batting average of 29.68 in 19 matches, a significant decline from his average of 42.79 at the end of the 2019 World Cup. This season, he posted only 452 runs and 100.

It has been suggested that Roy should be replaced by Phil Salt, who displayed a stellar international career start. James Anderson said, however, that England should have faith in Roy.

"Jason Roy is a player that does go through these dips of form but if you keep the faith with him, there is always a big score around the corner," he told BBC.

"And then if he gets into a run of form, he can go on and do some incredible things. We've talked about this in the past when Eoin Morgan was asked about Roy's batting but Morgan stuck with him, and he came good."

Mohammed Shami triumphs over Jos Buttler

Mohammed Shami dismissed England captain Jos Buttler to bowl him for four. Shami has sent Buttler out five times in ODI cricket, and no other Bowler has dismissed Buttler as many times.

"We talked about Shami being unlucky and missing the edge, but he didn't need them there," said former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta. "Full, straight, and Jos Buttler was just falling over his front pad."

England and India will proceed to a decider at Old Trafford on Sunday.
