While much of the women’s tennis world is looking on at events in the WTA Finals, it’s worth noting that the Buenos Aires Open is just around the corner.

This clay court tournament begins on 14 November and it’s already looking like it could serve up some fireworks. Can number one seed Mayar Sherif claim the prize or will challengers like Nuria Parrizas Diaz or Danka Kovnic cause a shock? One thing’s for sure and that’s that there will be plenty of intense tennis entertainment down in Argentina.
This year’s Argentine Open runs from 14 to 20 November and it features a prize pool of $115,000. Most of the best bookmakers for betting on tennis will be keeping an eye on Mayar Sharif to win the tournament. The Egyptian star is currently in 51st place in the WTA rankings and 2021 saw her becoming the first woman from Egypt to win a Grand Slam main-draw match at the Australian Open.
Since then the 26-year old has gone from strength to strength. 2022 saw her becoming the first Egyptian woman to win a main draw match at the French Open when she beat Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 7-5. However, Sharif was unlucky to have to withdraw from the next round at the Roland Garros with an injury.
Thankfully, Sharif has bounced back and reached her second WTA 250 Final at the Emilia-Romagna Open. Significantly, this included an exceptional win over Anna Bondar - the winner of last year’s Argentine Open. Plus with a win over the then-world number seven Maria Sakkari, it’s easy to see why Sharif is the top seed at Buenos Aires.
Not that it’s going to be easy for the Egyptian star. This is because Nuria Parrizas Diaz will be fighting hard and is showing exceptional form. The Spanish tennis player has enjoyed a great 2022 so far as it marks the first time that she’s made an appearance in the top 50 WTA rankings. This came after a third-round appearance in the Australian Open, and at 31 years, Diaz has the experience necessary to go the distance.
It will also be interesting to see how Danka Kovinic fares in Buenos Aires. The 27-year old became the first-ever player from Montenegro to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2022 Australian Open and she put out reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu on her way. Plus with other contenders like the Colombian Camila Osorio and the Austrian Julia Grabher in the mix, it’s shaping up to be a fascinating contest.
The WTA Argentine Open has been running since way back in 1929. It’s held on the outdoor clay courts of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club in the capital of Argentina. However, it was only in 2021 when the tournament was made an addition to the WTA 125 tournament calendar.
Past winners of the Argentine Open have included legends of the women’s tennis world such as Billie Jean King, Virginia Wade and of course, Argentina’s own Gabriela Sabatini who won back-to-back tournaments in 1986 and 1987.
Last year saw the Hungarian star Anna Bondar winning the WTA Argentina tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over France’s Diane Parry. However, Bondar isn’t among the challengers in this year's competition and so the odds are wide open among the best oddsmakers for sports betting. This means that you can count on the 2022 WTA Argentine Open to be a thrilling spectacle.
