One of the biggest events in the autumn tennis calendar gets underway this Monday when the Rolex Paris Masters begins. The main tournament runs from 31 October to 6 November but the qualifying rounds are due to begin just a couple of days prior.
The Paris Masters is one of the most prestigious ATP Masters Series tournaments and it’s held at the Accor Arena in Bercy, just outside of Paris. There are expected to be up to 14,000 spectators at the main event and many more will be visiting the best bookmakers for betting on tennis ahead of the action.
The hard court tournament has given us many years of excellent tennis entertainment in the past. Last year saw the Serbian legend Novak Djokovic winning the single’s title. He beat the Russian star Daniil Medvedev 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and in doing so claimed his sixth Paris Masters title.
There was also some great men’s doubles action. Tim Putz and Michael Venus put in a heroic performance to beat Hugues Herbet and Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-7, (4-7), 11-9 to put their names in the history books.
Other notable performances at the Paris Masters include those of the three-time champion Marat Safin, while Boris Becker has also won the tournament three times including the first incarnation of the Paris Masters back in 1986.
There have also been championship-winning performances from US stars such as Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. However, no French player has won the Paris Masters since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s famous victory in 2008.
As part of the ATP Masters Series of tournaments, competing players have the chance to win points by progressing through the tournament. The winner of this year’s Paris Masters will get 1,000 ranking points.
There are a few British entrants into the 2022 Paris Masters and Cam Norrie has already been picked as an outsider to win the tournament at many of the best oddsmakers for sports betting.
Following impressive performances in Lyon and Delray Beach, he is currently just outside the top 10 in the list of favourites to win this year’s Paris Masters. But whether Norrie can go one better than his Wimbledon semi-final appearance remains to be seen.
Dan Evans is another British tennis star who’s been enjoying an upturn in form. He’s already managed to reach the semi-finals in San Diego and has broken into the top 30 of the world tennis rankings.
With an ATP semi-finals appearance from Montreal already under his belt alongside the Rothesay Open Nottingham trophy, Evans could be good for a surprise performance in Paris.
As for Andy Murray, he’ll be hoping to go one better than his quarter-final appearance in Gijon, but it’s too early to say whether he’ll be back to his best after his recent injury.
While UK punters will be watching the British stars with great interest, it’s far more likely that a foreign star will win the €836,355 in prize money. It’s the Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz who is getting the bookies excited as he’s currently sat in first place in the ATP rankings.
Plus Alcaraz has shown that he is excellent on indoor courts and shows no fear when playing against much more established stars. However, it’s also clear that Rafael Nadal has a strong chance of winning this year’s Paris Masters after another record-breaking year. Plus with Novak Djokovic in the picture, it’s going to be tricky to say who’s going to win this epic tennis tournament.
